Just finished bringing this one back from the dead. It's had a total strip down, clean and oil. Currently keeping time within a minute per day, so I still want to try and adjust the regulator.

The second case serial number is mistruck, but I believe it's a '0'.

Watch has been fitted with a lovely gold spring band that has a patent date of Sept 24, 1918.

Hello everyone. This is my first post so please bear with me...

I picked up this Rubaiyat pocket watch a few weeks ago and was hoping you could help me identify some more information about it. I believe it was manufactured between 1919-1921 based on the markings throughout the piece. Here is what I know:

  • Case Measurements: 42.95mm from 9-3 & 12-6, 50.24mm from 6-crown
  • Case Inscriptions: These are all inside the case... American Standard (with Globe), 25 Years, 14K Gold Filled, Monogram Quality, 1054041 (serial number?), there are also 4 scratched inscriptions on the inside of the case - 47123W, X46926, 19826W, L12129... The letters EGS are inscribed on the back of the case.
  • Movement Inscriptions: BULOVA W.Co, 17 Jewels, 5 Adjustments, Swiss, 122147 (Movement SN?), under the movement (behind the dial at the 9 & 8 position) there is an inscription of 1213982

That's all I know. The pictures I am posting below are exactly as I received it. I really want to restore this watch and get it functioning properly. I am fairly handy so I would love to do the work myself but I want your opinions before I really start digging into it. In case you didn't notice from the pictures, the glass is also missing.

Regards,

Jeff

Red 12, indicating a very early wrist watch. It is a common belief in the horology world that a red/blue 12 was used during the transition period (post WWI) from pocket to wrist watches, as a quick visual indicator as to where the 12 o'clock position was and thus the correct orientation of the watch so that the correct time may be read.

This particular watch I believe is so far the ealiest Rubaiyat (oldest Bulova) watch we have seen and the balance bridge uses the older style "Advance / Retreat" script rather that the "AF/RS" we typically see. Also the case serial number is the ealiest and I'm suggesting that the second number in these American Standard Watch Case Company cases is indicative of the year of manufacture (the case not the movement). So in this case I'm dating this watch to 1917.

Movement is stamped Rubaiyat SWISS and double stamped 15 Jewels 3 ADJ (bridge and plate).

Movement plate is a Swiss patent FHF 51482 with a lignes (size) of either 9 or 9.25.

Note the center, third and forth wheels have been plated with red gold (gold + silver + copper)

Another aspect to note about these early Rubaiyats if the movment layout. A typical Rubaiyat/Bulova movement has the balance wheel positioned opposite the crown, however the very early versions had it at a right angle to the crown (ie the 3 or 9 o'clock poistion) as shown in this watch.

Bought another Rubaiyat for my wife and thought I'd post it for the database.  Transitional, with the crown at the top.   I'm tentatively putting this down as 1918, but not really sure how you date them. Nice, running watch, with Rubaiyat on the dial, as well as on the movement, so I'm assuming very early...

I bought this watch at an auction just for the gold value, they told med it was 14k and link 18k. I won and opened the watch to my surprice it was 18k. And now my detective in my started.

It was an Rubaiyat movment, what i first fought was some russian junk or copy. But then i found this site and found out it is probably an early Bulova. It is signed and has the year 1919 outside.

But it is in a MIMO case (what i think bucuse it´s has a Memi stamp) that is own by Girrard Perregaux at that time. And there is a crown stamp and a womans head stamp and an stamp that i cant se what it is.

The movment has Rubaiyat, swiss , 15 jewels,3 adj,.

I wolud really by happy for more news about the watch.

Hi all,

Here's a fun one.  I picked it up recently on eBay with a winning bid of only $20.50 and its keeping good time.  I've gotten my money's worth just having fun researching and puzzling over it...  I wanted to add it to the database for reference since I don't see much as far as old Rubaiyats and I also wanted to see what folks thought about it.

Its a very early Rubaiyat, possibly as early as 1917.  I've read both Mark's fine article "Retracing Bulova History" and the information on LIsa's site about early Bulovas.  This likely was made not too long after Bulova got the Rubaiyat trademark registered in May, 1917.  It could even be earlier (Reverand Bob noted a listing for Rubaiyat dating to November, 1916 in Biel Switzerland by J. Bulova & Cie, Mark found a 1948 document that said the Rubaiyat trademark had been in use by Bulova since November 1916, and Will Smith posted about a 1917 Jewelers Circular Weekly that claimed use of Rubaiyat by Bulova dating back to November 1, 1916).  BTW, great stuff in Mark's article and the accompanying comments and discussion...

Anyway, I found this watch interesting for several reasons.  First, the case is marked "American Standard W.C. Co", so it presumably predates Bulova's acquisition of the American Standard company.  It seems similar to the makings on the case of the Rubaiyat pocket watch posted by Mark in the discussion after his article.  No globe or shield marking on the case, and the case number starts with "2", which would date it to 1917 under Lisa's list of characteristics for 1917 watches.  I also noted that Will Smith's article "American Standard Cases Revisited C1919 through c1924 & later" included a Patent Office document that indicated that American Standard had been in use since August 1, 1918, but I assume that's when Bulova started to use it.  Also, Lisa theorizes that  the "American Standard W.C. Co" signiture pre-dates Bulvoa's ownership of American Standard, so perhaps this watch is either 1917, or early 1918 (before August 1, 1918)?

What is puzzling is that the watch has the crown at 3:00, not 12:00, so it doesn't square with LIsa's listing of characteristics that date a watch to 1917.  Does that also point to early 1918?

As you can see in the photo, the movement is marked "Rubaiyat", not "Rubaiyat W. Co.".  Also, there is no caliber or other markings on the movement other than "15 JLS" and "3ADJ".  Rubaiyat is also on the dial.  In any event, a very early Bulova...
