11ALC Bulova movement

Submitted by jamesdudman on February 10, 2016 - 2:07pm

Good day to all

I am having a challenge with the cannon pinon on this mvmt.(11ALC)

Does the canon pinion come in different sizes?

I had the dial refinished and now the canon pinon seems to be to short.............

WHY???????????

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

James

Hi James. Cannon pinions come in different heights but it doesn't make sense why the original will no longer work after a dial refinish. Are you re-using the same hands or putting new ones on?

Thanks

I am using the same hands, I agree that it doesn't make sense.

Is it possible the refinish that the dial shape changed during refinish?

Again thanks

That's the only thing it could be if you have the dial seated good. Unless they swapped dials on you at the refinishers. If you change the cannon pinion you may end up with the hands rubbing on the crystal.

I can only think that maybe they used a new dial blank for refinishing and it has a slightly higher dome? It doesn't take much to mess up hand heights. Keep in mind it isn't only the cannon pinion, the hour wheel has different heights and so does the sweep second arbor. This means if you have to lengthen one, you lengthen all. I would contact them and see wht they have to say about the dial being different.

Thank you all for your contributions.

Going back to my 1st question. So there is a difference from 1, 11ALC to another 11ALC ?

I will send them a email to see if they can shed some light on the subject.

I have three or four 11ALC movements and they are all the same on heights so I don't know but what Rob says makes sense.

I have run across different heights in a common Bulova movt, it depends on what dial and case it's from. I forget which one, I wanna say 7AP...  Flat dial= lower height. Some of the older watches that are curved have pronounced curved dials.
