You are right bobbee it is most unusual and interesting to see how one jeweler created a unique advertising gimic that probably sold quite a few to grand paws for their grandsons.

I saw this or something very similar on the bay a few weeks back. Great Bulova marketing.

yes it's a nice piece...haven't seen one before...Great Bulova marketing....and great advertising for the jewelry store too boot.  I'm betting unless just a few were made (illegally), they had Bulova blessings, if not a product of Bulova.

I've seen several of these over the years, The condition is generally the same as this one, 'rode hard and put away wet'. Post depression money saving theme is my guess. I also would venture that they were sold by Bulova.

"Money Box" Bob? - in the colonies we call this a "bank''.

I have also seen a few of these pass through on the bay, have not been able to snag one yet...but give me time.

There is no doubt about the time frame these were made and at first glance they do look like a watch in a box...

Probably sold cheaply to Bulova customers, or even given away to save up for the next one.

The company which made the piggy banks- National Products Corporation, Chicago- made several similar toys and stuff over the years...I've seen from the mid 1920's through early 1940's.  They are often listed for a pretty penny in antique and toy auctions sites, but I dont' know if they end up selling for several hundred dollars.  There's a few other "toy" products from this company listed in auction sites now, but I didn't see any Bulova piggy banks among the items listed...and an estimate of "$200-$400 is a little more than I'd pay for a toy- even a Bulova piggy bank.
I bet Bob is right-provided to dealers cheaply or free by Bulova- the jeweler puts their name on them, and either sell or give away to customs- and I love the idea "to save up for their next Bulova"!!
