Case polishing - 14k white gold plate

Submitted by honeyimhome99 on August 3, 2015 - 5:45am

I have a Bulova 'Windsor' 1928.

The 14kt white gold plate case is in need of repolishing. Any recommendations?

(Rouge and loose leaf cotton buffing have little, if any, effect on these types of case).

Re-enamelling/dial refinishing and replacement hands/crown are NOT issues.

Many thanks,

I'd recommend sonic cleaning the case in jewelry cleaner and leave off the polishing. Polishing doesn't remove scratches. It removes the plating down to the level of the scratches. Scratches should be expected on a watch made in 1928 and scratches look a lot better than the brass under the plating. Just my opinion, others may disagree.

Start by examining it very carefully with a loupe or good magnifier under strong light. If it has already brassed through, it will continue to do so when polished with any polishing compound. This is far more noticeable, needless to say when we are talking white gold than yellow. If it seems to be in fairly good condition, you may want to find a jeweller to do the polishing, and mention your concerns about brassing through. Light polishing with the right medium will make this watch look like a million bucks. Gold Filled watches have a comparatively heavy gold plate on them, and the right candidates for polishing can yield spectacular results. The key is having a trained person do it, and jewelers are used to this type of work.
