Dial Restoration vs. Value vs. A good looking watch

Submitted by llattuca on June 4, 2012 - 4:25pm

I'm new to collecting and new to this site.  I have primarily 1950's Bulova's and 1960-70's LeGant's and Orvins (department store watches).  I've sent several Bulova's out for dial restoration and lately I've been thinking that I may be devaluing the watches for the benefit of having a great looking watch.  What's the general consensus on When To Restore A Dial?

Thanks!!

Hi Larry,

I don't think there is a general concensus.

As a Collector I prefer to see an aged Dial, as many do, as it assures the Dials authenticity and originality. With a redial You really have no idea what You've got, unless of coarse You knew the Dials original condition.

A rule of thumb is to have a Dial refinished once its condition becomes detrimental to the value of the piece, which would depend on the piece and the Watch Owners judgement.
