Does any one else have this problem?

Submitted by el-ooose on March 1, 2011 - 10:32am

I just wondered whether any one was having any problems loading pages on MyBully. If I use IE7 the index page can take up to a minute to load and subsequent pages are very slow. If I use Fire Fox the index page hesitates and then I get the following error message.
"A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete."

"Script: http://maps.gstatic.com/intl/en_ALL/mapfiles/285c/maps2.api/main.js:410"

If I stop running the script page loading speeds up considerably.

I mention it mainly Admin, because I know that Google penalises slow loading sites in their site ranking procedure. For me the site has always been slow, even when I first discovered it some years ago. I have no problems with other sites so might just be worth a look.

I have been having the same problem, although I'll sometimes get hung up for 10 or 15 minutes trying to open or enlarge one of the ads.  IE freezes completely, keeping me from accessing any open tabs.   It doesn't happen all the time, but regularly enough to be fairly frustrating.  Once the ad opens, everything goes back to normal.  I've learned to keep this site open in a separate instance of IE so that, when it freezes, I can use another instance of IE to do other stuff.

Using Firefox the site loads fine but stalls momentarily while waiting for 'google.analytics'

Google collects data from site web browsers and displays ads that may be relevent to Your History at the same time saving the Your data for their own use.

Try emptying Your History.

Google sniffing Your browsers cache could be the issue.

 Admin

Yesterday was the first time that IE froze several time attempting to open ads. Also the bottom footer shows up quite a bit around or in the bottom comments box. If you need screen prints of this occurance let me know.

Wayne

Thanks for getting rid of the little red box.

It has been freezing up on me for weeks--since I started regularly visiting the site.  It was really bad over the weekend.

Try emptying Your History

It's the Maps Script that seems to be causing my problem. and I do also have problems with the ads sometimes.

As I said I have always had the problem and I first discovered the site maybe three years ago. Since then I have had four differnt servers and the problem is the same on all, so pretty sure it's not the server. In fact in the early days it was sooooooooooooooo slow I stopped using the site altogether.

Sorry to moan but it is frustrating.

philip,

I don't think the problem is the site, if it were We would all have problems and honestly I'm not having any real problems. In fact as I type this the site is running like a champ.

What is the processor speed of Your computer?

What Operating system?

How much memory?

Browser version?

Do You have a malicious program installed?

These can all come into play.

Fifth,

How often do you open the ads?  I'm having this problem also and have consistently had it.  Here are the specs on my computer:

Processor Speed:  2.16 GHz

Operating System:  Vista Home Basic running Service Pack 2, up to date with latest patches

Memory:  4 GB

Browser Version:  IE 8.0.6001.19019

No, I don't have any malicious programs installed.  I run up to date virus and spyware programs.  And if  one of those programs was trying to block the downloads, it would let me know, and it would do it consistently, not intermittently.

In general, the site runs fine.  I have no trouble reading and adding to forums and no trouble searching the databases.  Only the ads cause the freezes.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the site.  I don't know what the problem is, but I don't think it's my computer.  It very well could be something inbetween.

Hombre I am a computer pro. It's how I earned my living before watches.

Ram 2048 mb

Processor 3.4ghz

Malware? (what for three years)

IE 7 and Firefox. But IE 5 and IE 6 prior to this.

At least four different Broadband servers. Two computers. Same when I was trying to connect from Spain.

No my freind it's the site I fear.

And using the same logic, if it were my machine why do I not have problems on other sites. Well eBay a bit slow but that's the sam for all.

Not  linked to this problem but I cant see any of the advert pictures on my PC, only little red dots and I mean like 1 pixel little, where the pictures should be, click on it and it does nothing. Doesn't matter which browser I use. My laptop however shows them fine. Quite annoying having to run both at the same time. My PC must be at fault but any idea what would make this happen? Every other picture shows up just fine, just the adverts that wont show.

Having said that an HTML validator shows only minimal problems. But that proves not a lot.

As I said, I'm not having any problems, just a slight lag when the page first loads waiting on Google to do their thing. - 7 seconds max.

Web 3.0??? Firefox is based on IE and since the Web 3.0 improv... (and the dredded Firefox "Plug- in Container) FF ain't what it used to be... IE was so vulnerable 5+ years ago, I gave up on it... Perhaps try Google (Skynet) Chrome??? But there is no "ease of use" equivalent to the excellent FF plug- in: "Abduction," for copying eBay+ .png images, I don't think???

Those ads are (mostly) too small to read... so I very seldom attempt to view any of them, frankly!

And with the lack of standardization, and corporate and government snooping + cos. hiring virus+ dirtbags to make malware so they can offer "solutions" to "vulnerabilities..." blah, blah...

Also... I mentioned the solution (buying display ads in bulk, as a group) and like a crystal catalog fund... no takers, as par!

The most "trying" thing here (BY FAR) for me... is that darn little red "verifier" box!!!

Mumble, Grumble, out! (Wink...)

Yer see now, I never get the little red verifier box!

IE7 is the worlds best browser I think, still full of holes. FF sucks and Google Chrome is a joke, isn't it?

After the above post, I was logged  out (not by me)  and could not log back in..

Happens to me often. Whizzing along then suddenly can't go anywhere. It's as if the site has gone down. Next day it's usually OK.

Maybe it's time to go to Linux or buy an Apple!

let me explain a little better El, I made the post ,hit save and the post was made, but I was no longer logged in. No problems navigating or anything, nothing froze..It just created the post and logged me out. Would not allow me to log back in (invalid username/password, 3 or 4 times) So I created a new password and here we are. This has never happened anywhere to me before...just found it verry odd after the former posts elsewhere about some anivirus hits on some unauthorized posts and with ZIlla posting again, I thought I should mention it. No problems since, havent noticed any freezes as of late either....

Finallt the admin chimes in....sorry all having some family time and been trying limit my time on the computer something which is becoming increasingly harder to do.

A few points to consider.

  1. The first version on the myBulova.com website ran from my home server which wasn't that great.
  2. Same for when the site was upgraded to the Drupal CMS
  3. Once the site started to get more hits I upgraded the server to a proper hosting environment (currently in Australia), this is also a shared server.
  4. Since the site has really taken off (THANK YOU TO ALL!!!!) these issues have started to increase.
  5. I really have any issues using both IE7/8 and FF - could be because I'm in Australia??

What I will try over the next few days:

  1. Remove the Google maps from the front page.
  2. Look to upgrade to a server in the US.
  3. Tweak any performance I can.

Please feel free to update this if you see any improvements or the opposite

For the Vintage Ads, many of the new ones added are infact quite large (any were up to 500KB) so can take a few seconds to load depending on your system and connection)

I sincerly hope I can rectify these issues to give everyone here a decent experience when using the site.

Anyone recommend a good hosting provider in the US?

Wow, what a difference!!! Index page opens in seconds now and the whole site seems much faster. In FF. Hang on I'll try IE.

Yep that does it for me. Excellent.

to bring it up again would anyomne know a fix for this problem : Just a red pixel size dot where the adverts should be. doesn't matter what browser I use, i've tried 4. Its my pc I'm sure but cant seem to remedy it.

That's an interesting one. Have you looked at your browser security settings. Although I think that's unlikely if it's happening in all browsers. Do you have problems on other sites, or just the ads page?

GVP
Posted March 8, 2011 - 12:47pm

 Hi

Just this site. All other photos on here show up, even if it is of one of the adverts, but uploaded on the forum for instance. Have never had any problems with any other sites.  I set brower security to the minimum and it did nothing, reset all browser to default and changed nothing. cleared caches, run CC cleaner. Defragged the memory and hard drives, Updated all the flash players, java and so on, still nothing. Checked my firewall setting, nothing. Even changed security provider lately too and still nothing. I can click on that tiny red dot but it brings up a blank box...works fine on the laptop, just this pc, which i do most my internet stuff on.

Can you confirm that they are red dots, or are they red crosses? If it is crosses the problem is almost certainly with your Java settings. Now your getting into a very complex and difficult area to sort out. I suspect the only people who fully understand Java are Java.

Open the control panel and see which version of Java you are running. Should be Java 6. If it's not, update it. There is no way to restore the default settings on Java, so it will either be a matter of laboriously going through you settings with the aid of the web, or perhaps uninstalling and reinstalling it.

And even if you do all this there is no guarantee that it's Java causing the problem.

It's so weird that it's only happening on this site but having said that web design is not an exact science. As we have heard above, different people and browsers seem get differing results depending where they are located.

Another thought is your server and popup blocker settings . Security has become the worlds number one enemy and has gone into overkill. Your not by chance using Norton?

I'll keep thinking but still lean toward Java.

Go here http://javatester.org/version.html do you see a pink rectangle?

Try this. Open a command prompt (click run and type "command prompt in the box") Type java -version into the command prompt box. If it returns this result

'java' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

it evidently means you don't have a "Sun Systems" version of Java.

Sun Java seems fine. It must be a problem somewhere else in this poxy computer. Steel toecaps and sledge hammer may be the only answer :)

Looks like by turning off the Google Mapping it has removed a lot of hang time...I guess this use ti work once apon a time when the site didn't have many members, but now its taking a while to render all the member locations.

I will be ading a seperate page that still shows the member map so we don't totally lose this cool feature.

Not sure what is causing the images not to load, although I have a feeling its a javascript issue/setting on your browser/s

Can you get to this page:

Thanks guys. I'll check the above when I get back on the pc later tonight. I am looking after our baby today so just got a minute to check whats happening in "Bulova world" on the laptop trying to teach him about it, although he seems more interested in Dummies (pacifiers) and dribbling on his bib...
