This seems to be another 70's bulova but why does it have the accutron symbol on the movement?

I could be corrected here but I do not believe that Accutron's are quartz watches. I see the Accutron logo on the movement but maybe the were really promoting the next generation of quartz technology as being better and left the Accutron logo go to the wayside. JMO

I think they did.  I've got a few w/ the tuning fork which were quartz, and some which didn't say "quartz" on the dial.  Late 70's if i remember correctly.

Well it runs great and I pick it up for $15. Thought it was high for this watch but the Accutron symbol on the movement was different.

The 'tuning fork' became part of Bulova's logo (registered trade mark) in the 1970's (or '80's ?)

i have a accuquartz made in 73. it is a 218 from start to finish. why it was called an accuquartz is beyond me, however in a price guide i recently looked in it was priced higher than a typical 218 accutron.  jfoley

Bulova set the watch making world on it's ear with the introduction of the tuning fork Accutron in October 1960 and they continued making and selling them until 1977 by which time the Quartz watch had made them pretty much obsolete and they no longer sold well enough to be continued. BBulova used the Accutron name and symbol to sell watches that had absolutley nothing to do withthe original Accutron.

In about 1973, in an effort to stay current, Bulova intoduced the Accuquartz which basicall used a quartz crystal to control a 218 tuning fork movement and it retained the tuning forks.

Many purists, myself included, think that a true Accutron has tuning forks.

Hi lyle, Are you saying the newer quartz watches had to be tuned/adjusted the same way as older Accutron's ? I think not and in fact a quartz crystal is preset and does not ever need adjustments once tuned, As an electronics trained technician my training and background in that disapline can say quartz timers are pre set/programmed to set parameters and they do not change unless they fail completely and have to be replaced. Older Accutron's used em coils that could require tuning over time or when the battery was changed. Correct me if I'm wrong, jmo

Quoting a book I have "In the Accuquartz, the tuning fork has become passive and is no longer responsible for regulating the watch, it is only there to drive the hands ---. However, the adjusters on the tuning fork cups still need to be tuned to the quartz to ensure optimum battery consumption. "

I am not a watch maker nor an electrical technician, I was just trying to point out that the Accucuartz is not a 218, it is a 224 and there are some differences.
