Upside down 2 for 7

Submitted by llattuca on January 19, 2018 - 11:54am

Recently I've seen several Bulova's from the 30's / 40's where the dial's number 7 is actually an upside down number 2.  Is this legit?  Did Bulova actually do this or was it a creative way to restore the dial?

Thanks!!

Yes, I have seen this on many watches, not just Bulovas.

Hi Larry, If this is what you are talking about; yes it's legit and from the factory.

Yes that's a great example... Good to know - I've been hesitant when i see the upside down 2 that it was a bad job of dial restoration.

Thanks again!!

No, they are good. Here is one in my personal collection. 1951 Academy Award that is on my wrist as I type. It is an instance of "fancying up" the number font for effect. It's all about the details. That was a good question to ask.

If you take another look at the "2", the top is longer and strighter than the bottom of the "7" within this number style.

They are usually different, but with many of these 1930 style watches the 7 did look like an upside down 2...similar, but not neccessarily the same.
