Watch ticking.. seconds hand moving fine... other hands... not so much.

Submitted by plainsmen on December 29, 2010 - 12:52am

The hour and minutes hand.... not moving.

So if the watch is ticking... seconds hand is tracking fine... and the main hands aren't moving... what could be culprit gents?

Oh I almost forgot.... the hands move/track fine when I'm setting it.

This is grandpa's watch again... so reguardless I'm eventually taking it in for service/cleaning... and I'll ge this problem fixed as well.  It would be nice to know what I'm probably looking at though.

Thanks guys,

Plainsmen

Sounds like the cannon pinion that drives the hour and minute hand wheels maybe buggered.

If the watch is ticking and the wheel train is advancing but neither the hour or minute hand wheels are moving then the transfer from the cannon pinion is not working.

Oh... now that's service for you.  A diagram and everything!

Thanks Stephen!

Is this something the guy can fix relatively easily since I'm going to ask him to tear it down anyway to give it a full clean/servicing?

Yep sounds like a minor issue. Whats the movement type?

I agree with Stephen.  The cannon pinion most likely needs to be tightened.

This is a easy fix and anyone who services the watch should not charge you extra for the fix.

The canon pinion is loose from wear, and during a service he should check the tention and make sure it is tight enough,

The process is simple, Pull the dial, lift the hour wheel, pull the canon pinion off, stick a small broch in the canon pinion, take side cutters to the side of the canon pinion and give it a little pinch, reassemble and your done.

Most watchmakes have a canon pinion tightener that works the same as well. Either way , it's a 1 minute fix.

 Hope this helps.  Mike.....
