It is My beleif, although unsupported, that this Watch is from the 'ACADEMY AWARD' series of Watches produced by Bulova in the early 1950's. The Striped and Diamond Dials on those known pieces and the Harlequinn pattern shown on this Watch are all patterns synonymous with the 'Court Jester', an original form of Theatrical  entertainment dating to Medievil times and with Theatre in general.

This Watches fingerprints are the same as other known 'AA's - 21Jewel 7AA movement, Gold Caseback and a Dial showing an open Seconds track.

I might go to my grave trying to figure out the mystery on these AA X dials!

3-29-2011 Looks like one of the mysteries is solved! The grave is looking further away! Now to solve the other AA mysteries :-)

This watch was originally thought to be a possible Academy Award model. However, there is no proof. There is a color picture of 7 Academy Award models that confused me & most of our members that made the comments below.

Lessons Learned:

One picture is worth a thousand words, one erroneous picture can mislead thousands of people.

I don't have the specific ad illustration for the (2nd generation?) "Academy Award" related timepieces marketed/sold AFTER the lawsuit was settled (in 1950) which allowed Bulova rights to continue selling OFF these same case designs, while apparently refraining from utilizing any remaining "gold or silver curtain" dials (?) but interestingly... this watch is engraved: 4.15, 1951 (see the live ebay listing below, for reference:)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290530789462&ssPageNa...

and this is clearly another (original) '51 "X" dial in a modified His Excellency "UU" style case, akin to the others... And likely one of two "X" dial styles in the same (AA) style cases, manf. in 1950/51 (?) and sporting the 1949 (- 51?) 21J "7AA" (vs. 7AK) movements...

The interesting thing about this particular watch (which is just like the remaining one I just received back and will soon resell... see image no. 5 below) is that it was actually engraved and given as a gift... in 1951! (i.e. vs. later resold in say 1953 +/-) And therefore it appears that these same CASES might well have also been used  (AND SOLD?) with 7AA movements in 1950, 51(and maybe later?) as either Academys (maybe to Academy Award "Runners up," and/or the general public?) Or maybe not?! (But there is the one ad illustrating this model, as such! THE PLOT THICKENS, or not?!

:-)  Scott

P.S. And my thanks to Marlin Silva, for the eB listing link!

Fantastic white gold version of the 1949 Academy Award Model "T", sporting a 7AA, 21 Jewel movement.

New crystal, just serviced, new seconds hand.  Thanks so much to Mike at Timemachines for the tuneups!

I was going to sell this one but I think after seeing how great it looks, it'll be staying with ol' Plainsmen.  I had originally thought when I was purchasing it off auction it was natural yellow gold as seen in the pic below.  Not so much when I opened it up!  Seems to me that the white gold versions are fewer and farther in between than their natural gold bretheren.

Nice looking and good running watch, will replace leather strap when I find a original style expansion band.
