Double codes on back of watch

Submitted by cc224 on December 11, 2010 - 10:46pm

 Hi -

I just purchased a black face square women's watch with diamonds (32).  I noticed on the back it says J Bulova M5.  But then right next to the M5 it appears to have a smaller m8 stamped on it.  Any idea why the watch would have two codes?

From what I understand the M5 means 1965 but just not sure why there is another code next to it.  I will try and take a picture but I don't think my camera will be good enough to get the details.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

cc

Hey CC...

I've actually ran across this a few times just this week.  What I'm assuming is that the first was the initial production of said model?  Then the next code is the one when YOUR watch was produced/sold?

The double stamps I'm talking about are right on the movements... I don't know about the case code's which I think I understand your talking about.

If it's somewhat plausable for the ones on the movements it's possible it's the same thing.  That's a bit of a large gap though.  The ones I saw were only a year apart... ie 1937-1938.... 1941-1942... that type of thing.  Not 3 years apart.  Curious though...

 Hey Plainsmen -

Thanks, that makes sense.  Yes, I am talking about on the backside case of the watch.  I need a new band for it so when I get it to a jeweler, I am going to ask to see the movement and maybe I can get a picture of that too.  The print is really small on the case so it's hard to even see.

I agree, very curious.... 3years does seem like a large span.  I'll post a picture of the watch to see what else people may know about it.

Thanks again,

CC

A picture will certainly help.

The J will just be the case makes I would think, in this case "Jackay Watch Case Company" although can't be certain without a photo of the back.  Like Plainsmen it seems very unusual that there would be a 3 year gap, do the stamps look the same, could it be that someone fitted a later movement and stamped the case to correspond? What markings does the movement have?

First of all, thanks to the person who made the picture the right size... I couldn't figure it out.

The second code  on the back is smaller and looks like it might be added on .... i need a better camera since mine just won't pick it up.   I noticed on another watch that I saw online that it also says J Bulova - so I think that's just a company logo.    I will get a look on the inside when I take it to get a new band -- kind of a newbie here and I'm afraid to open it up on my own -- afraid I'll break or bend something.

As soon as I can get more info -- and a shot of it I will post it.

Thanks everyone!
