Submitted by spiro13 on January 13, 2011 - 4:13pm

Hi

I just won this watch on e-bay. It looks like an American Clipper with a plain bezel. I would like to know if this is corrct.

I'm gonna go with 1936 American Clipper. What say you guys?

No.

American Clipper has an engraved Bezel, never seen it without one although I have both versions dated 1937 and both have the 17J 10AE  I consider the plain bezel an unknown. - also this case bezels horizontals and verticles seem slightly wider ? unless it's the camera angle.

Dial and movement are right on.

Ben Hur possibly.

Get this, not an American Clipper but a 1938 Canadian Clipper.

Here is another one...this one is 1939 Clipper and out of the Sears Catalog.

1939 Bulova Clipper

and another 1938 Sears.

1938 Bulova American Clipper

All have plain bezels.

1938 Sears ad clearly shows the plain bezel version as an American Clipper - what's with the other two? lol

Stephen,

Let Me run this one past You.

At this time Sears Roebuck and Co was a retail giant, number one in the U.S.

Could they possibly have reserved the right to name the Bulova models sold through them ?....

No doubt, available in a plain bezel.

I'm looking at the width of the horizontals and verticles, particularly the verticles, to Me they seem wider on the OP's watch, again I own one of these and the American Clipper detail is slender.

Dial, Hands and movement all match the Clippers.

Optical illusion or real difference??

Also, for the OP, is Your watch Yellow of White Gold??

I don't have the watch in hand yet but the seller describes it as "10 K yellow rolled gold plated",

the caseback reads:  "B-10k rolled gold plate, 7881764".

Tony,

Most likely an optical illusion on the case, too many of the watchs' other details are the same.

I agree with Bob and Stephen, it's a Clipper.

Hi

I received the watch and here are some specs.

Case: 29.7MM X 25.2MM

Crystal Opening: 25.6MM X 16.6MM

I believe you ID'd it correctly as an American Clipper. Perhaps a "B".

It winds and sets smoothly and runs intermittently. Hopefully it only needs a servicing and a crystal.

I I got it for $16.50. Additional pics.
