Bulova "Peter Pan" watch

Submitted by OldTicker on February 12, 2011 - 10:55am

While searching for a crystal for one of my watches in a 1952 BB supplement I found one that matches, when I looked up the watch name I about fell out of my chair when I learned they called it "Peter Pan"

While I have yet to find a New crystal that matches it in my personal crystal collection I am still searching.

Crystal size is 23.60mm x 21.60mm and it is curved both ways.

 Movement is dated with a square (46) and is a 17J 10AK

Looked up the history of peter pan and it looks like it began around the early 1900's as a book ,then play.

Disney didn't get ahold of it till the late 40's.

It looks a lot like a "His Excellency XX" with the horned lugs, but has more of a round crystal.

They must have been at a loss for names when they named this one :)

Possibley called the 17J version the Peter Pan as the 'XX' which it does resemble is 21J.

Everyone happy to add this to the database as a Peter Pan?

1949 Bulova His Excellency

They look a lot alike, is the difference the engraving on the top and bottom of the bezel?? What are the crystal spec's?

Jewelers and watchmakers estate sales are always full of good stuff!

BTW, you should get your package tomorrow morning.

Ticker,

Mine has the engraving, unfortunately (?)

Peter Pan is engraved or not engraved?

Engraved on the top and bottom, not all the way around, see top picture.

What color is the dial, this one is Silver with Black tracks and Gold raised markers.

Ugh is right!

I would much rather show someone my "Minuteman" Bulova than my "Peter Pan" Bulova LOL!

Mark,

I think you might be on to something, look at his ears and compare it to the lugs on the watch.

He's got two sets Greg, look at the Red ones on top of His Head. - Horns that are identical to the lugs.

Minuite Man or Peter Pan??

1948 was known as the Peter Pan, in 1949 the name changed to Minute Man. lol

There's a late 40's ad showing this Watch as the Minute Man Greg.

Peter Pan the Movie was not released until 1953.

There was an 'unknown' 1952 Watch around a Month ago, same Case as the Minute Man but with a Dial variation, markers were Gilt hashmarks, Hands were Gilt Alpha. Typical 1950's style.

Ticker,

The Catalogue suppliment is going to list changes that occured in the Year of release. Prior Year Models can't be named from a Catalogue suppliment as those listed are new updates for that Year.

admin,

IMO this Case design changed with an upgrade to the Dial from Minute Man to Peter Pan around 1952 - 1953 coinciding with the release of both the Peter Pan Movie and the Catalogue suppliment being used for ID.

Its a minute man, cant see what all the debate is about?

Agree, Minute Man, as the age of this particular watch pre-dates the possible 1952/53 release of the Peter Pan model (which as Mark indicates coincides with the release of the original movie). Bulova loved this sort of marketing hype and no doubt jumped on the band-wagon...in fact by this time they probably owned the damn thing!

That is good news!

I seen the ad for the Minuteman and the other watches posted, It makes sense that Bulova would use a new released movie to put a new face on a old watch.

I will have to keep my eyes open for a 52-53 Bulova that has the same style case, kind of curious to see what one looks like....

For now I am very happy that its a Minuteman!

Greg,

The case is going to be the same, the Dial and Hands are the variants.

* lugs vary slightly but this is the unknown Watch I was thinking of, dated 1952.
