What's going on here?

I know that we're not supposed to post links to current EBay auctions, but....  What's the deal with these watches?

cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll

I've seen these off and on listed by this seller for a couple of years now.  I've even  asked him to come up with some sort of proof that they are what he says they are.   Anyone know what he's talking about.  These really don't seem like anything special.   BTW this same guy sold an Academy Award last year for $1190!!

Sounds like ge's attempting to drum up some high prices to me. Interesting that he doesn't show the "Olympic Spirit" badges or any other evidence of authenticity.

Bulova was the Official Sponsor of the U.S. Olympic Team, 1950?

The set is legit.

Actually there were no Olympic Games in 1950. Finland 1952 and England 1948. ????

1948 St Moritz, Switzerland. - US wins Gold in the 4 Man Bobsled.

The official sponsor information may be incorrect but the Watches are tied to the Olympics.

Commemorative Set perhaps?

Commemorative Set perhaps?

Yes that would certainly account for it and the dates would be right as well if they were issued in 1949.

They certainly look as though they have been treasured. Original I'm sure, not refurbs.

Hey All, I have an ad some where that shows this to be the "Treasurer" nice watch, but no hype to pump up the price. I sold a couple of them this past month and have had several others so they are fairly common.

I eMailed asking for photographs of the Olympic info on the boxes. He will try but to busy at the moment and he claims that it can be seen in one of the photographs, but I certainly can't. Anyone else see it?

His reply :

Thank you for your welcome enquiry. Although we have had many types of Bulovas in the collection, we are not Bulova experts and most of the information about these special models has been kindly provided bt a very knowledgable Florida collector, who first contacted us about our Academy award watch. He seems very well informed on these limited release special event models and we just relayed this information, which we believe is quite accurate. If you would send us your email address we could provide further images of the cases and their insignias.

Needless to say no further images were ever received.

In my opinion these are nothing but a couple of very common Bulovas.

These watches have been around a while and whilst are very nicely presented there is absolutely no evidence of the following being true.

These are undoubtedly amongst BULOVA'S most famous World Acclaimed Models, their “1950 OLYMPIC CONFERENCE MASTERPIECES”. Specially produced in very limited numbers with Top Range 17 Jewel “CALIBRE 10BM” SWISS BULOVA 1950 MANUAL MOVEMENT and an equivalent Top CALIBRE SWISS MOVEMENT for theLADIES MODEL. The specially produced and DATE STAMPED “ART DECO STYLE" Mens WATCH CASE with its Fantastic Design is Stamped on Back, BULOVA - LO” (for 1950 ) and its Case No 1943762, and is still in MINT ORIGINAL LITTLE USED ORDER, with its 10KT. Yellow GOLD FILLED finish as its SUPERB DESIGNED GOLD Figured DIAL with ARABIC FIGURES, being all completely original and like new order, with the LADIES MODEL very original, with the case showing more use wear yet still in excellent order. The Caseback is Stamped "Bulova" A9 (for 1949), but the works and Case was specially customised in 1950 for this Limited "OLYMPIC" Model.

Without any paperwork to prove this, this sale is a beat up using lot of wonderful selling phrases like:

  • undoubtedly amongst BULOVA'S most famous World Acclaimed Models
  • 1950 OLYMPIC CONFERENCE MASTERPIECES
  • Specially produced in very limited numbers
  • works and Case was specially customised in 1950 for this Limited "OLYMPIC" Model

Is the case back stamped 1949 or 1950???

Well I did get a response and some new photographs of the cases, six in all. Here are two of them, they are bog standard cases and show no mention of Olympics at all.
