Great 1938 Vintage Ad solving some mysteries

Submitted by mybulova_admin on March 30, 2011 - 7:08am

Gents, as part of the generous donations myBulova.com has received I have been buying some vintage adverts. This one inparticular may be on great interest to a number of you.

or go to the Vintage Ad section and do a search for 1938.

Happy to recieve any donations, no matter how small, as it will benefit the site and its members (and that includes you)

Although this post was only addressed to the "gents" on the site, I'm going to dare a response anyway.

Very cool ad.  I believe it even shows my unengraved Treasurer, which we were discussing last week.

Oh settle down Francine!  Haha... I'm sure the "gents" included you as well!

I think I just bought this ad a couple days ago.. sheesh.  I'm going to have to coordinate with that Admin character.

Dang... ya.. I did.

Though I paid for it like 3 days ago and it shows shipped... it's still advertised?  Maybe she had more than one?

Speaking of these old ads.. I just bought 7, 11X14 frames with glass and backing for $39 shipped!  These old ads are going to look decent in them.. .and I can always paint them if I want.  Though I took the last of them I think.

P.S.  I'm getting tired of word verification every other post it seems.

I'm sure by "Gents" he means "Gentlemen & Gentlewomen"...  :)

Nice ad.  I feel like I want to scour all the local antique stores for old  magazines.  Is there any one magazine in particular that is likely to have Bulova ads?

Sainttess, I did just that. bought 4 Look and Life magazines for $36.00. Not one Bulova ad in any of them! If I were to do it again I would try The Saturday Evening Post.

I've helped add some of our current ads....  where I've found most of them is older department store catalogs.

Sears, Montgomery Wards, Alden's, Spiegel's are the ones to look in for the majority.  Now there are some other ones... early Barnum and Bailey's Circus programs have some.

Saturday Evening Post's from about 1924-1930 have some very nice ones you can see on the site.  They're almost deco works of art themselves!

Seems to me that the Library of Congress probably has all of these magazines digitized and searchable, perhaps online, however my so called broadband is way too slow for me to even attempt to search for them....an idea though eh???

If I could spare the cash I'd give this site a try, only $10 for a life time....all scans of vintage catalogs of all sorts, not sure if you can dl them or not but I would assume as much as the membership is on the bay as well, no sense in being a member if you cant actually 'have' the material.

I saw this awhile ago but haven't given it a shot.  The guys website doesn't look to have been updated on the front page for a couple years... 2009?  Wonder if he's even still on there.  Would be a waste to spend the money on his paypal if he's no longer monitoring?

Is all good man...  I did the same as you a few months ago... and have been brainstorming on ads since!  heh..  Also I looked at the Library of Congress website long ago... they don't have catalogs online.

Also...  Sears has been talking about putting their catalogs online... but haven't yet.
