1941 Blue Glass Face Cover??? updated w/ Pictures!!!

Submitted by just_joe on October 30, 2011 - 10:29pm

I have found this watch and need to find more details about it. Here is what I do know about it. It is from 1941 with a "star" stamp on the movement which is 10AX 17J. On the inside of the back cover it is stamped with the following Bulova, 14K Rolled Gold Plate Bezel, Stainless Back, New York, 11523 "hand etched". There are also other numbers that hand been hand etched inside of the back cover, 14421 HR or AR, 5 or S - 308, H - 1185, The back cover is stamp 1088241. The face is bronze in color and the hands are blue(ish) in color. The part that I can not find any information is that it has a Blue Glass Face Cover. This is where I need help. Through my research I think that an "Attorney" best resembles the piece that I have except that there is a fine line that runs around the inside of the numbers that follow the exterior lines of the case. I have tried twice to upload pictures but have had to retype this 3 times because my pictures are to big. I do have them and if anyone would like to see them let me know and I will email them to you. Thank You in advance

Not sure about the guy who said they were clear crystals dipped in dye!

The Blue Crystal is aftermarket - also seen in Yellow, Green and Red.

The Color is cast into the Crystal during manufacture.

I have 2 Military Watches with Yellow Glass which is original IMO, used for anti-glare.

Ok so I have sent a couple of pictures to the admin to be uploaded. When trying to upload (after resizing) it just locks up. I was also wanting more information of which watch this is and does the blue tint affect the final value of this watch?

What color is the bezel I can not tell from the pics? Here is an ad for a 1942 Stamford yellow gold and Alderman pink gold & I believe is a match for your case. The hands are correct. Your dial differs from the ad but, that could have been upgraded in 1942. The 17j 10AK movement is correct.

I suggest that you select the Home tab & Add a Watch and fill in the blanks with the information that you have. Use the pictures that you have. This gives us the opportunity to properly ID your watch.

hmm rose dial with a yellow gold case? Is that what everyone else sees?

So did the Stamford come with different style dials? The one I have has a thin line inside of the hour numbers and the one in the print ad does not??? Plus the print ad says 10K rolled gold plate and mine is 14K rolled gold plate. Also what are all of the hand sketched number on the inside of the back cover? Would anyone associate a price with this piece. I am wanting to list it on eBay I think. The clock is in great working condition (could probably use a new bezel). Thank You for your help!!!

Is it yellow or pink 14k RGP? If the case is yellow & the dial is pink, I would suggest a creative frankenbully. I can't figure out where that pink dial came from. As far as different dials I would venture a No. The Stamford & Alderman models that I have seen comply with the dials depicted in the ads.

We are mainly a group of Collectors discussing Bulova Watches, not discussing their value as what is valuable to one may not be as valuable to another.

Try the 'What's it worth' feature.

The case is yellow gold and the face is gold tone too. I think that the picture shows a different shade. I was not trying to step on anyones toes about pricing sorry if it came across that way. I would really like to find the model but I have done sooo much research and can not find another one like it. There are a couple (ie.stamford) that are similiar but the thin line on the inside of the numbers is messing with me!!!

numerals aren't a straight print either, they look raised. A nice Dial.

It is probably a dial variant that Bulova used, usually if the dial was a bronze or copper color, the case was Rose or Pink Gold. The case is a Stamford/Alderman case, and the era is right.

This is just my personal opinion, but if I were looking at buying this watch, the first thing I would do is replace the colored crystal with a clear one. It makes it very hard to read the dial.

As far as the value of the watch, your best source is completed eBay auctions on a similar watch, in similar condition.

Hello Ticker,

Could you please tell me what Crystal I would need to replace the colored crystal on this watch? I have had it listed on eBay for various amounts but I think I will keep it for myself and will need to replace the crystal.

Thank You,

Joe

Here is another interesting bit of info...an ad out of one of my GS catalogs.

It looks like GS sold a tinting kit for there Acrylic crystals...It looks like you could color them like Easter eggs, what will they think of next?? : )
