1962 Bulova - Merchandising/Service award watch?

Submitted by Brooke on October 31, 2011 - 7:04am

My husband was given this watch and has had it in his tool box a couple years. I am including a picture of the watch face. From my amatuer research, it appears to me it could be a merchandising watch. The image below the Bulova name on the face is definitely of a pig and it has 6 small red or orange squares on each side of the pig in a checkerboard pattern. There is no company name listed. The only words on the face besides the Bulova name are Swiss on the very bottom and Waterproof.

Here are what the markings on the back read. They are very clear but I couldn't get a good picture of it that was worth posting.

BULOVA - 10 KT  R.G.P. - SHOCK RESISTENT / WATERPROOF / ANTI-MAGNETIC - M2  / G187642 - Any information on this piece would be helpful. Thank you.Unknown Bulova

Could be a Purina marketing watch, the checkerboard is/was part of their logo...perhaps specific to pig feed sales

Fifth is this a Purina pig? The lugs on Brooke's watch appear to be pigl-tail-ish & I wonder if that may have influenced case selection for the award watch.

Thanks everyone. I kept checking my email because I thought it would notify me of a response, my apologies for not checking this post directly earlier. I appreciate everyone's input. Is there any value to it? If there is, I'd like to get it to someone who could restore it and appreciate it.

Also, is mine missing its second-hand? It didn't look like it had every been opened but it does appear it should have one. I figured it had to be associated with an agricultural company but couldn't find anything related to it when I searched. Didn't take you folks long at all to find it. :)

It should have a secs hand and they are available. If you want to have it restored, several members here provide that service.

Brooke

Was your husband awarded this watch or just acquired it & put it in his tool box, maybe as a work watch?

Wayne, no it wasn't his. His father buys and resells items regularly and gave it to my husband for some reason. He put it in his toolbox, as you guessed it, just to monitor the time. He was just cleaning out his tool box and asked me if I thought it was worth anything or if he should just discard it.

Shooter, I don't want to get it restored. I was more interested in getting it to someone who could appreciate it, if it was worth their time. I don't want to discard something that would interest a collector. I asked about value simply to be able to tell if it was worth it for anyone, not so much to make money off of. If it has no value then I'm sure none of you would take the time to restore it.

Man, why couldn't this Watch have been in a sock drawer...

The Watch has worth Brooke, more to some than to others. If I were mine to restore I'd have the Purina logo removed, someone else may want it on the Dial and not....if that makes sense?

A lot hinges on the logo, obviously it would be of more worth to a Purina or vintage advertisment buff ect. than Us Watch bums as the 'SEA KING' is not uncommon.

: )
