My Pledge to my Fellow Members

Submitted by Geoff Baker on January 21, 2012 - 1:52pm

Ladies and Gentlemen, it has been a tough week for many of us here. I have something I'd like to say:

I Geoff Baker do solemnly swear that if I have any personal complaint or major personal disagreement with any member of the myBulova community, past, present or future, be it over a watch posting, comment on a watch posting or any other opinion, I will not carry the disagreement into any public forum associated with myBulova but I will treat the member with respect by conducting the conversation, discussion or argument in private. Furthermore I pledge to confine my comments to the WATCH discussion at hand. I am not talking about comments like " I don't agree with your ID of a Banker, I think you have a Treasurer because........".  I'm talking about comments like "well that's stupid, how can you possibly think you have a Banker?" or as in the case of this week, worse.

We love to argue the finer points of Bulova watches, every now and then we veer off into something silly and that's OK. Let keep the personal stuff and non watch related stuff in private as many of you have done this week. If someone drops below the line, I pledge to tell them in a private message, not a public forum.

If you think this is inappropriate or disagree, please feel free to tell me in a PM.

Geoff, well said, and a good reminder of the standard to which we want to hold ourselves and the site.  I said some things publicly this week that I regret.  However provoked they may have seemed at the time, it would have been much better to express them in private, or not at all.

I think we also need to keep in mind that we are used to each other's banter and can--most of the time--deal with it well, but new members of the site may not realize that we mean no offense or are just kidding around.  Many people spent hard earned money on their watch, and hearing so bluntly that it may be a worthless, cobbled together piece of junk--or, more typically, we have no idea what it is--may not be welcome news.  We could probably break that news a little more gently, while also letting folks know that their participation in the site is welcome.

I agree.  I'm at fault for a bit of the actions in question and I apologize to the entire community.  I'm sorry if I've offended in the past.

Except for Mark... he's still fair game right?

Well, I tried to be as diplomatic as I could with him, and explain how this process works, but it was getting very painful at the end, the insults that were hurled at some members were uncalled for...my typing fingers were getting sore from bitting them. I am glad we are going forward!

Well said Geoff.

I agree entirely as this week has  already seem ample use of PM by myself and others. Your pledge/suggestions,  shows that some good will come out of it all as we move forward.

Nova has also made some very good points we should all take to heart, myself included. We're so used to looking for hard facts, factual answers can be very blunt. I think we've all been guilty of that. Perhaps we really need to try being a little more sensative when presenting disapointing news.

Ticker, I applaude you, A true Diplomate to the end, a shame your advice wasn't taken. Your calm, even demeanor helped me keep an even keel as well. It may even have been the catylist to my taking my concerns to other members PM.

My Very Best Wishes to all of the folks here at mybulova.com
