Watch Description

Recently acquired this one... a real Mystery! 1924 is a guess. Movement is 8 1/2 lignes, case is 18K non-Bulova. I found a post on NAWCC site about a similar Lady Maxim (no photo). The case was 14K gold filled, but had the same manufacturer's stamp. Is this a BULOVA, or was it made for another company by BULOVA??

Note the "New Round Model" part, suggesting an earlier, different case shape Stephen?

Hmm I missed that bit. My search continues for earlier adverts for this model.

Yip, 1935 has been noted prior. I have seen the Dial (numeral) style post introduction of the piece to the site on early Bulova, so I'm back in the 'it's a Bulova' Camp.

The Case Seriel # still indicates a product of 1922.

IMO

Do we have enough data/examples to assume the first case SN / production date was used as early as 1922?  We have Lisa's recent two examples w/ first case SN of 1, being possible 1921 production date.  It's great we are seeing more of these old watches.

Will,

For Me, there's enough evidence to support that the Case Seriel number method of Dating a Bulova Watch is consistant from 1921 thru 1949.

This is of particular importance for Watches which Date to 1921 thru 1923 as Bulova's published method of Dating their Movements was not initiated until 1924.

Agreed, it was an important find of your's Mark, in particular in helping to date the earlier Bulova's.

Agreed. Not much evidence but you have to go with what you've got.

Mark.. those first three years are important ones as no date symbol before 1924.  Bob  the correlation appears to be pretty strong during those years...perhaps not as strong 1947 - 1948, but until one does some analysis on the strength of these correlations, I think of them as very strong trends.

update.

Close scrutiny of the vintage Database ad Dated 1922 http://www.mybulova.com/sites/default/files/vintage_ads/1922-AD.jpg reveals on obscure line of text of the very foot of the page which reads:

J. BULOVA COMPANY, Fifth Avenue at 16th Street. New York.

"Makers of the famous Hudson Maxim and Rubaiyat Watches"
