I am unable to open the watch so I am guessing on the date and movement model.    My mother passed away and this was in her jewelry box.  I think she inherited it from my grandmother.

Unknown until we can see the insides of the watch. The movement should help us greatly I would think.

unknown, or as Geoff suggests, moved somewhere?- we don't have a movement model or jewel count, pictures or not. The year is a guess, and doesn't jive w/ case SN.

Closest I can find to matching the lugs is the 'American Girl'. Its not my call but another model series to consider.

Well....there's 43 variants of "American Girl" listed in 1955.  Includes and differentiates by:
17 jewel gold filled (both yellow and white),
17 jewel solid gold (both yellow and white),
17 jewel solid gold w/ diamond dial/bezel (both yellow and white),
21 jewel solid gold w/ diamond dial/bezel (both yellow and white),
and several other variants that appear to be different dial color for most of the above....
Boy that sure helps.... :)

The barbara is in the 1937 adverts too as is the Lady Bulova C which i think would get my vote as there is no deco etching on this or the lady bulova c
