Hi jabs, assuming the 1928 code on the movement (I can't quite make it out) this appears to be a marriage of a non Bulova case with a Bulova movement. By 1928 all Bulova cases were being marked "Bulova".

The case style is more early-mid 1930s and I believe we have seen Bulova watches in Star cases before (I think) Case serial number starts with a '2', so if it is an original watch I'd date it at 1932. However if the movement does in deed have a cresent moon date stamp I would agree with Geoff and say ita a Non-Conforming Bulova with a marrige of a Bulova movement and non-Buova case.

I once explored the movement of dating I found two marks - crescent moon (1928 or 1938) and squared shield (1931)

Ok will look at the 1938s to see if there is a match. There are similar styles to the from the 30s but nothing that's a match for the case which will lead me to say the case in non original.

Yea perhaps non-conforming in a star case.

We see later Bulova in Star Watch Case Co Cases the question would be this early? or was the Case used to refurb the Watch at some point?

The overall Case design is more mid 1930's and the Stainless Steel Caseback suggests1940's +

1938 'UNKNOWN'

Is a case back hallmarked base metal stainless?  I don't know.  Two date stamps on movement don't  muddy the waters...

Is this too early (if dated by movement) to be in a star case?  Square shield only dates to 1931.

Let me rephrase above statement.  I'm not finding any 6AF movements in our watch record database which also have movement serial numbers after 1932.  There are examples in both the movement database and the watch record database later than 1932, however none of those movements post 1932 have serial numbers.

I believe the movement in this watch is from 1931 (square shield) and therefore based on the case SN, the complete watch is from 1932.

The earlier crescent moon date symbol may have been stamped when the movement SN was stamped, so if there's any patterns in movement serial numbers by year for 6AF, we may expect to see the mvnt SN corelation w/ the earlier date stamp (1928) rather than the latter 1931 Square Shield.
