Hello Randy Z, welcome to myBulova. This certainly is a fine looking watch, it appears to be in very nice condition. I think I've found an advert from 1954 matching your fine watch. what do you think?

The hand engraving you note are watch makers service marks, typically only decipherable by the individual that made them.

I think you've nailed it.  That looks so close other than the faceted crystal and the slight flairing out of where the band attaches.  Maybe they alterered it between 1952 t0 1954.  It was my grandfathers watch.  My mother had it serviced and passed it down to me.  It works great and I'm tickled to have it. Thanks so much for the help.  It is intriguing as he was not a man of great means and in todays dollars it seems to translate to roughly $625. Again, thanks so much for your time, it is much appreciated.

agree with Sutton, and the three Roman numerals etched inside match the last three digits of the case s/n (214)

Sutton works for me.
I wonder if the Roman numerals etched inside case (their relative "freshness") were etched by a watchmaker doing a service vs somewhere on the Bulova assembly line?

Hi.  I enhanced the photos and played quite a bit with lighting in order to get those to show.  I didn't know that they were even there until I read the info on the website about how to date the watches.

The roman numerals are for 214 which match the last three digits of the case serial number.

It's very interesting to see that this practice was still occuring at this time as we first see this in many 1920s Bulova watches.
