Forgot to mention, in case it's not clear in the photos, both the case and movement have the L4 date code.

A handful of service marks, so it was being looked after, a good sign. 

'54 23.

These dials are much harder to restore because of the texture, I don't know if International even does them.

This and my dad's have only the line "Self Winding" without the line about six adjustments. I find it interesting, too, that both my dad's and this one that I linked to were manufactured in 1954, but both were purchased new in 1955. (They also both seem to match the 23D in the 1955 ads.)

Hi Farace, welcome to myBulova. I think you're most fortunate to have this wonderful keepsake from your father, I hope you cherish it forever.

I agree with Ken, that it should be classified as a Bulova 23 D. I don't think the slight dial difference is of any consequence.
