Watch Description

My grandfather bought this watch for my father on the occasion of my birth in 1960. My dad was supposed to give it to me when I turned 18, but he got attached to it so I told him to hang on to it. I was a long haired, rough and tumble type, so it really didn't fit my lifestyle. When my dad passed (2014) I finally took ownership. While trying to find out about the watch I came across this site and thought I'd throw it on the pile. I thought it was a 1959 Beau Brummell, but it has the diamonds in the 1,3,5,7,9,11, and I've read here that there are no ads for this type of watch, so I don't know what it is.  I can't seem to successfully upload any pictures of the watch, though the one with the model number seemed to work. Here are some links, though. Perhaps someone with more tech savvy than I possess can do it.

Hey Johnny, Welcome to my Bulova.

Your watch case carries the  date code for 1958, might have been a bit stale when it was sold in 1960, but this is not unusual. Ideally we'd like to see the movt for the sake of completeness of the record, but we can try and ID the watch with the pics as posted. It does look like a Beau Brummel to me.

Thanks, Reverend.

Actually, it's also possible ol' pops bought it earlier for himself, then gave it to my dad when I showed up. The watchband was actually more expensive than the watch. According to family lore, he spent over 1k having it custom made. He was a high roller in the 50s, bought a new Cadillac every year, which makes me think he bought it for himself, then on the spur of the moment decided to start a family tradition/heirloom deal. We weren't a real formal bunch.

That is a beauty. Can't tell from your photo, is the back marked as gold plate or 14K gold?

...but now that I've looked at the pics of your watch, I see where it should be, but that section is worn away on mine.

I just re-reviewed your photo now that it is included in the ad and think I can see high point wear through of gold plate to base metal, is this the case?

Great story Johnny AND a great looking watch.  I'm a fan of all heirloom watches but the story kicks this one up a notch on my scale!

Typically the diamond dial 23 j watches , like yours have a connection to the Beau Brummel name that Bulova used. While I can't find an exact advert match to yours I'll suggest we use that name here to.

Tentative ( that just means I can't prove it with an ad photo) 1958 Bulova Beau Brummel

PS - I updated the year to 1958 based on the date code L8
