Good Question Bob,

How about this one?

I picked it up this weekend, same style dial, 21J also a Academy style case. Dial Looks to old to be a redial, will be interesting to find out if I wasted $40.00

Yours makes the third one of these two tone dials I've seen. The case is definitely an AA.  I thought these watches always had a ribbed or curtain dial? If that is an AA you got a great deal for 40.00 bucks.

Hi Stephen,

I had seen this and read the debate before I clicked the sniping bid!

If its a "AA" the happier I am, but from the debate on the post it sounded like it was still up in the air, Needed Curatin Dial to be Pure....Fingers crossed, the ad posted there was of a "N" with the same dial and different case, Who knows for now...

LOL;

I speculated, and you know how that goes sometimes...

There is a Old Bulova Dealer that operated in this area for many years, and from what I have been told, Had a jewely store that was passed down to him in the late 30.s.

He operated it up till the late 70's and sold out. He is in his 90's and in a Nursing home here local, and is said to still be as "sharp as a tack".

I think I am going to try to get in touch with him and possibly his kin, who knows what kind of info and maybe some documentation that may be available from a visit.

Sounds like a very rare and excellent opportunity to save some vitall information before its lost to the sands of time. Hopefully his memory serves him well!

Good luck!

We've all been here and debated this to death. Unfortuneately there's still no conclusive evidence that would prove beyond any doubt that these 2 tone dials were used in AA models. Scott's posting of the ribbed hooded lug "NN" model seems to indicate otherwise but it's not very legible. My contact in Florida who has exclusively collected Bulova AA watches and memorabelia insists that only the "Curtain" dials went into AA models. I'm holding on to all my Bulova's withh AA cases and the 2 tone quadranted dial just in case. With all the collectors here at mybulova.com , a proven, documented, conclusive answer is just a matter of time away. Until then I'm sure we'll all be keeping our eyes open for books, magazines etc dated 1949 - 1952 looking for the ads.

One thing I did notice on the watch in the link is that the dial is a refinished job. The quadrants are the wrong size. They are too narrow on the 12 & 6 and too wide on the 3 & 9.

I agree, I have contact with a collector exclusively of the AA and he states the same re the ribbed curtain dials, possibly the same chap.

Oh and you are right about the redial, the 'Bulova' is not central either.

The only true Academy Award models had ribbed faces.

I gather these ribbed dials only apply to the mens line of the AA series, as there are certainly non-ribbed dial and case versions of the ladies AAs.

Different case same dial, if indeed it says academy Award, which in all probability it does. But then I could also read 30 jewels  which is obviously not right but thats what my eyes tell me.
