Bulova Stars & Stripes Chrono crown and hacking or not?

Submitted by dejjl on February 10, 2011 - 5:48pm

Hello, I am new to this forum although have been around another watch forum for several years now.

Anyway, I have 2 questions relating to my Bulova Stars & Stripes Chrono; does anyone know where I might source the correct crown and should the 7736 movement be "hacking" or not?

Thanks

Dave

Hey Dave welcome aboard.

Honestly, I have never heard of the Stars & Stripes Chrono. Can you enter it in the data base and describe it for us.  I'm wet behind the ears as the newer watches go. By posting it maybe draw an expert or two that speaketh Chrono.

Hello,

You might be able to find the crown on ebay if you look hard enough, or you might spend some time surfing the internet with watch part suppliers. (maybe Casker, they have alot of older parts)

The hacking system was designed for the military and it would allow several people to sink their watches together. This was done with a regular time only watch (may have date) But with a chronograph, that was the hack! When you clicked the timer button it would start the chrono system and record the seconds/ minutes/ and hours so there was no need for a hack back in the 70's in a chronograph.

I'm not sure if there was too many watch manufactures with a hack chrono until the valjoux 7750 came along.  but I could be wrong.

Very cool watch and welcome  aboard

Hope this helps.  Mike......

Simply one the most fabulous watches on earth - The Bulova "Chronograph C" aka the Stars & Stripes. This is my pride and joy. It is not hack set, at least mine isn't. Good luck on the crown, that's going to be a challenge.

That's the one. If anyone knows of a crown, please let me know.

I love the watch but I have to say that I struggle with straps for this. Lug width 20mm just feels a little too narrow. I think I will source a heavy duty mesh for it.....?

Thanks for the welcome chaps.

Dave

Dave - I just added mine to the data base (as Chronograph C). The mesh bracelet pictured is the one that came on the watch originally and it is 19.8mm.

Good luck on the crown.

Thanks Geoff. The mesh looks great. To be honest, if I get it on a nice mesh I will relax about the crown for a bit. I get a bit compulsive about originality!

Hello,

I just recently joined this site in search of answers and guidance about my 1970 Stars & Stripes (Chronograph "C") I inherited mine when my grandfather passed away. He was the original purchasser of the watch and was even wearing it when he died. Ironically it stopped at the time of his death. When I came into possession of the watch it was not working. My wife took the watch to a gentleman to be repaired while I was deployed to Iraq, as a surprise birthday/welcome home present. I am not an expert by any means, and I know my wife had the best intentions but I do not beleive the watch repairman did a very good job. He replaced the crystal which was cracked and managed to get the watch working. My questions are these:

1. Was the original crystal plastic? ( I thought I remember it being glass/crystal).

2. Where can I get an original mesh watchband ( or as close to original as possible).

3. Can anyone recommend a reputable high quality watch repairman ( The crown screw feels loose and the stopwatch hand tends to stick sporadicaly around the 5 o'clock position).

I appreciate anyone input that can help me restore this beautiful watch back to its original configuration and glory.

Dan

Do you know if the dial and hands have had their luminous paint redone? MIne has faded a bit and isn't as yellow as I'd like them to be. I'm courious if there is anyone around that could re-lume the dial.

Hi Dan,

I beleive that the crystal was originally plastic and it is going to be hard to find the original band for it, but you might find one on Ebay if you look long enough. I may have something close.

Your welcome to send it to me and I'll make it run well for yu, but I must say that chrono's are expensive to repair or simply service. If you have a interest, send me a personal message.

 Mike..
