Bulova S.V.P VI - What can this stand for?

Submitted by GVP on May 1, 2011 - 3:59pm

I have two watches dating 1958 & 1959. I have found the model name to be the S.V.P VI as shown on the crystal packet and this is the only watch to take this crystal. It is obviously an abbreviation but what can it stand for? I've been looking for anything like this around the time line but have failed to come up with anything.

Don't know if you have seen this already but it's all I could find.     On Friday, August 28, 1959, a U.S. federal trademark registration was filed for S.V.P.. This trademark is owned by Bulova Wa..., ********, FLUSHING, NY 11352. Not much help I know but at least we know Bulova owned the trade mark.

gj

Are both of those watches from the Seville series of Bulova?

I was wondering if they were military watches. When searching Bulova svp a couple of military watches came up, but no further mention of svp when I opened the page.

Hi all, I have now added a photo to the top. Doesn't appear military. I would suppose that if this is the SVP VI then there would be previous SVP models? unless of course it is named after something like a war ship maybe...

Now that we've got a picture its obviously not  military. The most popular acronym for svp I've seen is senior vice president.

They were my thoughts too. I have tried to find the patent number that bulova supposedly submitted for this but can find no more information. I am sure this will hold the exact name.

I have found that Arde Bulova (who ran the company) died in 1958. Then General Omar Bradley Chairman of Bulova Research & Development Labs, and friend of Ardes brother took control of the company......The dates coincide,  Could it be they marked this occasion with a new watch Senior Vice President VI ? Although I think his official title was Chairman of the Board....

I've tried using all the details on there to find the patent details but nothing gives. Almost like it never exsisted. All very odd. thanks for putting the effort in Bob

I gather that trademarks and patents are quite different in the amount of detail one must provide when applying.  In the case of a trademark, like the above, you simply provide the words you wish to register.

I notice a 'Bulova 231' listed on the package also.

Would S.V.P. be a patented new plating process?

seems odd they would list it on a Crystal package though....just kicking around ideas.

Watches, in Class 27 is listed in the right column of the Patent document.

Does anyone know what Class 27 watches are?

Wayne, class 27 must have been changed since 1958 because class 27 now seems to be associated with undertaking and caskets.
