Corrigan , 2 piece bezel or no??

Submitted by bourg01 on November 10, 2011 - 4:25pm

Hi Guys and Gals,

Well, I finally bagged a "Corrigan" at a price I could afford. Now, for some reason I've always been under the impression the the bezel was 2 pieces that come apart. I can see the gaps and it should come apart  be properly cleaned and polished but I can't get these to separate and I don't want to get agressive........just in case they weren't ment to do so. Your comments??

When the original bands were removed on these the piece of the bezel that held the crystal was left to fend for itself.  Some folks added screw type pins to hold it on, others glued it in place and still others just crossed there fingers and wondered one day where the crystal went.  Yours is probably glued.

Yup.. the top part if the bezel is probably jp welded...

The lugs of the top bezel part go over and on the outside of the bottom ones..

Thx All,

I'll soak in just about every solvent I have here but if it's been JB welded,  I'm toast.

I have the same situation with one I picked up last month.  The second thing I did was try to work off the upper section.  It's on so tight I was on the verge of bending pieces that I wouldn't be able to replace.

Left everything where it's at for now.

Case looks in good enough condition to leave as is, or does it need to come off to replace the crystal?

you may be able to apply a little heat from a propane torch ( Jb has a 600f @ 10 mins heat thresh hold ) which is well below that of the rest of the case (pure gold melts at 1947f and any lower k will be higher melt point, brass underlayment is much higher) and this case doesnt appear to have any soldered points but check it out first. Jb will also soften in gasolene when subjected to heat variations (it gets brittle ) but gas and heat are not good mixes lol. When jb gets warm enough it will become bubble gum like and then after separation could be removed with aceton while its still warm.I would heat the case upside down just in case there is any solder , it would'nt flow out of the case edges. Its a lot to do but if you want it apart...I think I would try soaking it for a week or more in pure Acetone before I tried anything else, Acetone will dissolve most epoxy based adhesives given enough time. Heat will speed up the process, maybe set a small container of acetone with the case on top of your water heater to get some heat fluxuation. Since you dont know for sure what it is I would def try the acetone soak first.

Thx Shooter, I'll do the soak 1st . If i can't get to lift off easily< well, it will have to stay as it is cause I just don't want to damage it. I'll just have to polish it as one piece. Other than cleaning and polishing, there really is no need to separate them.

I looked everywhere for a solvent that would dissolve JB, even looked up its MSDS sheet but nothing really touches it except heat, and abrasives
