Is this watch gold?

Submitted by Michael Adams on November 26, 2011 - 11:38am

New to the forum with a question. This watch says 18K on the back, but it looks like a cheap plate to me. Can anyone help? Are the diamonds real? How old is this watch. Is it fake? Tried to load some photos but it didn't work. How do I load a photo of this watch?

Thanks Mike

Mike, try going through the "Add a Watch" section and list it as a unknown. Should be easier than trying to upload pics into a forum category.

Wouldn't 18K would be a little soft for a Watch Case?

No, I've got three or four, and one more on the way. The alloys they used at the time held up pretty well.

Some of the really early ones tend to wear easier and were more "Sunday go to meeting" watches, than everyday "Knock arounds".

Yeah, 18K is the softest alloy that is generally used for jewelery.  In the U.S. most of those would have been from the 1920s or earlier.  18K was more common in the European market then in 1932 (I think)the U.S. prohibited private possession of gold over a certain percentage,  That is why 14K watches are the best you will usually find on markets now.

Seen a few 18K watch cases.  Ones with sharp corners have a tendency to split in these corners.  Doesn't seem to happen to round cases though.

Michael, please read the instructions here to upload your photos. Alternately you can use a 3rd party image hosting site for your images and simply put the image URL in the space provided.

I gather the watch in question is a Bulova?

my great-great-great Grandfather took some pics of his watch. Said it was pure gold. Would be nice to have seen that watch. He was a con artist! May we see the pictures please!
