1969 gift Bulova

Submitted by Kunapets on January 25, 2011 - 3:42pm

My wife to be (and still is) gave me a Bulova in Feb 1969. It is the 10K gold filled, 23 Jewel, non-automatic, and I believe it is the Ultra Thin model. I cannot figure how to open it, so I do not have any other numbers than the case E795938. It says "waterproof" on the face, but moisture has gotten and the face/hands are discolored. It still runs but only for a short time. I think a good cleaning will fix that. I have pictures, but can't figure how to download them to this forum (Pic are 1.03 M each). Four questions.

1. Does this watch have a model name, or am I right that it is an Ultra Thin

2. How do you open the darn thing

3. How do I download pictures.\

4. Any help in locating new face and hands

Thanks  KenS

Ken,

Sounds like the one piece Case.

DO NOT attempt to pry this case open as I have seen more ruined this way than not. The stem is two parts and will seperate, a crystal lift is then used to remove the glass allowing the Dial and movement to be removed through the face.

A second method would be to apply air pressure to the stem hole after removal  which will 'pop' the crystal.

A press is used to install the new crystal on this style.

Another Waterproof style will have a bezel around the glass, it lifts off then the glass comes off.

On both styles the stem will be 2 parts.

Look at the late 1950's - mid 1960's Presidents in the database. A photograph would help further in the correct identification.

Fith Ave - Thanks. I thought it was a 1 piece, so I did not attempt to pry. I did try to press down the crystal - sometimes that work to pop it out, but not on this one. Guess I'll have to send it out for rapair. Before I do, I am going to try to locate the face and hands.

Thanks Again   Ken S

You must reduce the size of your photo to 150 kb or less and save it as a jpg file.

1 open the photo

2 Right click then select edit

3 go to the image drop down list

4 select strech and skew

5 Change Horizontal -Vertical boxes to 40 in each box

6 Under file select save as.

7. save file with the word "small" at the end of the file name

Unique!

President - lower right on the ad.

Google International Dial Co for the Dial, they can refinish the existing for $30+/-. Hands should be easy to find if not Int Dial can do those too.

Ken,

Go up to the Information tab and click on Bulova ad's, that will bring up the ad's in the database, go to page 6, and this ad is in the 1960 ad's, click on the ad, and it will come up, click on the expanding box in the lower right corner and it blow it up for you.

I for one have never seen this critter before, it's very cool.

First thing, you will need a crystal press to remove the crystal, then put a small set of twezzers under the crown and apply a bit of pressure as to unlock the two peice stem, then the movement should come right out.

If you dont work on watches, it might be just as well to ship it off to have a watchmaker remove the dial and send it out to be refinished (around $50.00) and then he can service the movement and get it back looking new for around $100.00 or so.

 Very nice watch.  Mike......

SORRY FIFTH AVE!   I somehow missed your post, dont mean to step on any toes, I just had a brain fart!

Ken,

In looking, has the Crown on Your Watch been replaced?

A common source of moisture into this style Case is an incorrect Crown, or seal failure. I beleive the correct Crown is smaller, sits in the recess, Acorn shaped and has a Waterproof seal.

The watch is 100% original. In fact if you look at the President ab0ove in your message the crown is flat. I also found another ad with the flat crown.
