1959 Bulova 23...ladies watch I think??

Submitted by cstafford on August 2, 2011 - 11:21pm

I would love to know the history of this watch. This was from an estate sale and after that, a thrift store. I just posted it the other day after becoming a very excited new member! By the codes on back, I'd say it is a 1959 Bulova 23. I've not had a chance to take it to a watch repair shop to see the movement codes though. There is only one other watch I have seen close to it and that is the 1961 Bulova 23. The winding button on mine says the full name Bulova, whereas the 1961 has only a "B".

This watch does not seem as  common. Anyone know why? Also, the lady at the store says she was told the diamonds on it are just chips. They seem a bit big for "chips" though.  I'm hoping some very knowledgable members would have some information to pass on.

Any help for me here...?  Thanks!

Carolyn

Looks like it is a La Petite model from this 1959 ad.

Thanks! I  am so happy to have found this watch for a steal of a deal! Would you have any idea why there are less of this style? Were they just not as popular? I notice too that the watch band is different. Did people pick out a band they wanted individualy?  My band is just a tad fancier than the one above.where ot connects to the watch.

Carolyn,

If you go through the 1959 ad's showing Ladies watches you will find that the La Petite was offered in many different bezel  and band combo's and they seem to all be 23 jewels with Diamond accents, so in 1959 they were a high dollar watch that many could not afford and with many different styles/combos, less of some styles were made/sold.

Bands are known to break or wear out and this watch is 50+ years old so there is a good chance the band may have been replaced or it was something that the orginal customer chose as a upgrade at the time of purchase.

the great thing about these old ladies Bullova watches is that they can be had for a song on the bay.

Lol, thanks very much for your input. I never had a watch that had as much history as this brand does, so it has been quite an education! I really do appreciate your input too. I am woefully ignorant on this type of useful jewelry, other than some very good advice about grandfather clock care from an old timer....

Thank you, truly!
