Submitted by Ellierose on January 26, 2012 - 9:48pm

HELLO I JUST BOUGHT I WHAT I AM PRETTY SURE IS A SKY CHIEF..IT DIDN'T COME IN YET SINCE IT JUST ENDED..THE DIAL IS SHOT..BUT THE CASE LOOKED GOOD AND ALL THE GOLD ON THE BEZEL IS THERE...THE SELLER HAD IT LISTED AS 1927 BUT I HAVEN'T SEEN ONE THAT OLD IN THE DATABASE...SO I DON'T KNOW I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN BUYING A DIAL FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS ONE THAT IS ALITTLE BETTER,DOESN'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT OR HAVE THE SMALL NUMBERS LIKE THIS ONE HAS..I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO RESTORING THIS WATCH...I HOPE I DON'T TAKE A LOSS ON THIS...

I think you mean Sky King, right?

MAYBE I DO..MY MISTAKE...someone made a sky chief somewhere along the line..

For the $40 to $50 for the restoration, I would send the dial in to be restored.  You could spend that much just for a replacement and not have it like new.

I am considering trying for a 2nd one and getting the dial done in black like one of the ones in the database here.

ID was possibly correct the first time...

There are no ads/evidence showing this Case as a 'SKY KING'

That hardly argues in favor of Sky Chief as the proper ID.

Says volumes for a 'SKY KING' ID Lisa.

No, it doesn't.  And you should consider how much more helpful it would be if you would just say what you mean instead of making people guess, or force others to explain what you won't.

So, Ellierose, as far as I know, there is no "Sky Chief".  We have no ad for one, there is no listing in the database for such a watch, and no such name has, prior hereto, been discussed on this site (per the whole site search I just conducted).

So, that leaves the question of what is your watch?

I suggested that Sky King is what you are looking for, because there are quite a few watches just like yours in the database identified as a Sky King.  If you look at those listings, you will see that Fifth has taken issue with all of them as not matching the advertisement for the Sky King.  The case shape is the same, but the engraving is different.   Others claim a basis for the Sky King as applied to the model you have.  It is a matter of debate.  On this matter, I tend to agree with Fifth, in that the ad we have does not match this case.  There is at least one example of a watch in the database that does match the Sky King ad, in case you want to see what appears to be an actual Sky King.  If you agree with that analysis, and, therefore, conclude that your watch is not a Sky King, then we are left wondering what your new watch is.  For that, I have no answer at present.

Regardless of whether we have a good ID for your watch, it is very nice, so congrats on the acquisition.

I think of it as being helpful--my approach, that is.  Yours, not so much.  Sharing knowledge and experience is a good thing.

Come on Fifth... Its not like all of the 30s ads are crystal clear and sharp.

This one can easily be the listed watch:

Try this clearer image:

And then look at this matching watch:

it seems that not every sky king in the database has the lines at the top and bottom of the case..and this watch matches the other ones in the database so i don't see what the problem is...also the case curves on the back just like the other ones in the database..

David,

I took liberty of enlarging the T. Maddux ad You are showing.

discussed here: http://www.mybulova.com/node/2576

Not every 'SKY KING' in the database is a 'SKY KING'.

Obviously.

Form Your own opinions, I have mine.

right the ads may have the lines on the case...but i am talking about members' watches in the database not in the ads..so does that mean that the sky kings in the database that don't have the lines like this case doesn't ,are they entered under the wrong name...and then is this watch an unknown?? it could just be different variant...and i am good with that..what otherwise this will go on forever with no one committing to anything

Yes, that is what Fifth is saying. . . those other watches are mislabeled.  If you read the discussions in those posts, you will see that Fifth raised the issue there as well.  It's always a good idea to read the discussions, not just look at the pictures of the watches.  Watches can be listed--and can stay listed--under a name that is not agreed to by all members.

right i got it...but if it was a different watch then where is it in the ads..i mean the ads a pretty complete..and one thing i notice about bulova is that show all the models on the ads than other brands, say like gruen...so if this watch had another name then where is it in the ads...wouldn't bulova want to advertise watch the made..that is the point of advertising in the first place...just like when you go  to bulova's website today..they have a model and then there are different versions of that model ie colors dials bands and so on...but they all have the same name...and like to day if you see an ad for one and when you go to the store you see ones similar but slighty different its is if you want a  different dial or band or colors but it is still the same case and movement combo..that is what i mean...i don't know why that is hard to understand...if a watch has the same case but different dial or different engraving pattern doesn't mean its a different name watch..its is just a different apperance package...just like when buying a car...you can have a camry with leather and a sunroof...or you can have one without or one with leather and no sunroof or vise versa..and the name of the car doesn't change..
