Have you looked through the vintage ad listings?

Have been through the ads as well and found nothing , it does not appear that the case was in issue until about 1948 , its the usual situation , is it an unknown or some one went into a jewellers store and liked the case but preferred the X face , who knows. Its unusual that the case appears newer than the movement , its usually the other way round.

I would guess there was more flexibility in those days to switch movements and cases around  to suit the customer.

Just continuing from the above , I am surprised that there are no records on the watch numbers. I would have thought that for example there would be a run of numbers for a particular model and these would be recorded. this is also important for stock record purposes to ensure no pilfering of stock. If the numbers were never used for any stock control or model inventory , why go to the expense of numbering them ?

Most Bulova vintage records were lost in their last buy out, or this would all be simple

The "shadow dial" is recorded in the ads as a dial used in the later AA series. I have a ZZ model with the shadow dial and a 5 bump excellency case which is also shown as correct for the ZZ model in the ads.
