Watch Description

This one was fun to research.  There are two names for this watch Lucille and Luella.  Found ads dating from 1926-1929.  It seems there was a changeover year in the name around 1927.  All ads prior to 1929 were missing some engraving in on the ends by the lugs, the 1929 ad has the correct full engraving.  There was a 14k gold filled version and a 14K solid version.  So the typical questions run through your mind.  Was the extra engraving on one and not the other or was it an artist mistake?  Were there two names coexisting?  Here are my conclusions and will look forward to hearing what your thoughts are.

Lisa's example is 14K solid gold and has the same engraving as mine and the other gold filled example in the DB https://www.watchophilia.com/photogallery/bulovas-1918-1929/a1929-luell… and https://www.mybulova.com/watches/1928-lucille-3694 so it seems like it was on all of them and the early ads have an artist error.

I don't find Lucille in later ads so I am assuming there was a name change from Lucille to Luella.  It seems the overlap year was 1927.  As such I would suggest this be a Lucille and the one in the DB would be the Luella.

It is 14K gold filled, has a 1926 5AP 15 jewel movement.

1926, 1927 ads Lucille, 1927, 1928, 1929 ads Luella.  This ad is 1927 St__Louis_Post_Dispatch_Sun__Jun_19__1927_.

Hi Kathy, I am happy you don't have my book yet because it would have spoiled the fun of your research LOL! It will come out on 28 October to celebrate the 100th anniversary of their first Saturday Evening Post ad and contains 5 pages explaining the Lucille Luella story. The key question is "what watch was the model used for the illustration?". That turns out to be a solid gold Lucille of 1925 (!). Novelty was not a reason to advertise a watch! The models existed already for some time before they made it to an ad. This changed in 1929 with the introduction of the Miss Liberty that was introduced using an ad. The 1926 edition of the Lucille received the extra engraving but Bulova did not bother to update the illustration (as they didn't bother doing so for many other models!). That only happened in 1929, the reason being that they had introduced the filigree bracelet as a standard on solid gold and gold-filled models, so they had to update all their illustrations and in the process they updated the engraving to the reality. As you indicate, in 1928 there was a name change to Luella, one of the many name changes that happened. Some models changed name 5 times! Unclear why. One question to you: I did NOT find a 1927 Luella ad, only 1928 versions. So, this ad above you say is a Luella ad of 1927, can you give me some detail so I can find it?

Alex, I am very much looking forward to your book!!  I really appreciate your details, so very interesting and informative.  The 1927 Lucille ad is from The_Berkshire_Evening_Eagle_Mon__Jan_17__1927_ and 1927 Lucella ad News_Democrat_Sun__Dec_4__1927_

Ah, and I forgot, there is no difference in engraving between solid gold and gold-filled.

Well done, Kathy. Alex, your research pretty much confirms. Super cool watch. I am going to agree that this one by date is Lucille, and the other in the Db is Luella (by date) and should be updated.
