Watch Description

Recently acquired this 1928 ladies Bulova. The 5AP movement has a "square" date code for 1927, The case is 14k gold with 6 blue stones. It seems to be keeping good time over the period of 2 days that I tested it. Haven't put it on the timing machine though. I think it's like the other 1928 Bulova identified as a "Natalie" posted on the site. .

Wow, very nice condition! I will agree with your identification.

1928 Natalie

Like this one. I strongly suspect that your dial has been refinished in the past.

EDIT: Based on Alex's comments below, I agree, it a 1927.

Thank you Neetstuf. I agree with you about the dial being refinished. Seems like refinished dials nearly always have a grainy finish to them. I wish I had a filagree band for it, but people that have them for sale think an awful lot of them.

A beautiful Natalie from 1927, the exception year on the conventional dating method recognised by the American Standard signature, the signature used from 1926 to 1927 and confirmed by the date code on the movement. It can also be confirmed by the colour of the gold that is like previous years and not the bright bluish colour as from 1928.

Beautiful watch Merc, I'm with Alex on the date (after all - he wrote the book!) - 1927 Bulova Natalie

Thank you Mr. Baker. I'll go along with what Alex said too. He knows way more than I do about these early Bulovas.

The rule is as follows. Check the signature first and then the first digit:

Bulova American Standard + 6 = 1926

Bulova American Standard + 7 or 8 or 9 = 1927

Bulova New York + 8 = 1928

Bulova New York + 9 = 1929

This anomaly only happened in 1927. I can’t explain it, only observe it and statistically prove it when looking at the movement date code, like in your case.

Alex said this was a 1927 model. Can someone edit the date? I tried but am not allowed to.
