1927 Bulova Curtis 17J 9AN with Square date code, refinished & relumed Butler dial with refinished Cathedral hands. 14 K White Gold filled hinged case with a NOS 12K Gold filled Handi-fold rolled edge mesh band. The movement has been completely gone through with many new parts including a new mainspring. I received this as a Christmas gift last year (2010) with a bunch of other vintage Bulova parts watches, and finally finished it up today installing the new band...Oh well, some things take time...
**Update 9-9-12 Resubmitted to the panel for name correction to "President Madison" due to new ad found by Mark (FifthAvenueRestoration). The new ad is very hard to read, but the watch pictured looks like a match.
**Update 9-14-12 Model year changed to case serial number date.
So a 1930 Pres. Madisonn (case SN starts zero) ??? Slightly clearer 1930 Loftis Ad in databse, President Madison snippet below:
OldTicker- I just saw your request to resubmit to panel for ID review. Don't know if it was correct SOP to relist like a newly entered unknow watch, or just update w/o resubmission, but we'll find out :)
Comparing the Curtis, from the guide, with the Pres. Madison ad it appears that the Madison bezel is completely enameled whereas the Curtis is only enameled on the 8 scroll engravings. BUT, since we have 8 or so watches that match the "Curtis" drawing and none, that I can find, that are completely enameled I suppose it's just the artist's rendition of the Madison that is causing this phenomenon.
(Confused?)
I agree with the change to President Madison.

Here's my concern. The Cooksey et al price guides have come out since 1980 (or 1981?). I don't know if the first edition had a Curtis in it or not. Maybe the Curtis was added to the Cooksey guide in later versions. What if They have seen a 1928/29 vintage ad for subject watch and therefore named it Curtis. ...and We have just not seen that ad. Now along comes the Loftis ad in 1930 indicating Pres Madison. Maybe the watch was the Curtis in 1928/29, and became Pres Madison in 1930, and Cooksey et al have not seen this new Loftis ad to date?
Perhaps all we can say is in 1930 the Curtis is advertised (became?) Pres Madison. We don't change the pre-1930 examples ID names, but could give tentative ticks instead? Of course the option of number of ticks is up to each member, as is the option to change model name on earlier examples too.
I do see Geoff has an example w/ case SN beginning w/ a 6, housing a 1927 movement.
I vote 1930 pres madison for subject watch as it's a 1930 production case. The earlier examples- I don't know yet.
