Watch Description

Rare Brunswick-I didn't think this watch existed until a member showed me a picture of the real watch. This is the first Brunswick I have seen at auction. This Brunswick has a varient dial with a silver background and hand painted black numbers and tracks, cathedral hands and a raised gilded Bulova logo.

Well it's obviously a Brunswick case and the jewel count agrees with the ad. However, the dial not only doesn't conform to the ad but is very unusual as it has a circular seconds track, a cut-corner shaped minutes track, as well as the under whelming hour marker font.

I would say Brunswick with a non-conforming dial.

Agreed.

Therefore, would the 'unusual' Dial make the Watch a 'NON-CONFORMING' category candidate ?

Personally, I don't think Non-Conforming should replace the model name. Just because the dial and/or hands of a particular watch doesn't mean a model name should be dropped. If someone searches for a particular model in the db relevant watches won't show up.

aha...I hear ya DarHin  ...but they will, if the searcher uses the keyword search of the watch DB search options.  They can search comments and/or additional information for this type of thing.  That's how I find many "unknowns" which are very similar to a particular name.   If they search for Brunswick in a key word search, they will get all occurrences- both those in the watch DB "correctly" named Brunswick, and those unknown  and non-conforming examples in a Brunswick case- as it would most likely be stated somewhere in the thread.
IMO the options are to (incorrectly) name the watch a Brunswick in the root record and then award no ticks or one tick for unconfirmed, or reassess our working definition of non-conforming.

DarHin are you suggesting a name like "non-conforming Brunswick"?  While it may complicate some things, I'm open to the idea.

Non-conforming is my vote, the reasons why are on record right here in the comments...because of the dial. It should be moved to that category so it will not confuse someone searching for the real Brunswick. No "ticks" are need on a non-conforming watch.

This is excellent stuff Gents -  I reeeaaly like the idea of a subcategory/sub specie  "Model name" hypen  'Non Conforming' in these instances. Great idea Darren, one We should all explore. Thanks for that one!

But, the Dial has a Bulova signature !?

I have to be contrary and toss that one out there.....

I agree. "Brunswick", with non conforming (or modified) as a subgenre, maybe with the reason identified, ie.: re-dial or wrong dial, and movt swap, hands replaced with incorrect type, crown, or even crystal in some cases. I see faceted or magnifying crystals where they should not be, for example.

good arguments all around. the Brunswick case can't be confused with anything else at present? and the dial, although unusual, is not 1 of those strange red or blue re dials. Two ticks from me as entered.
