Well, Since we've seen 3 Clipper variants b, c, and f with 17J movements, I'll go with the 21J Ben Hur, letter designation to be determined.

'BEN HUR' has an arched radius to the Vertical bezel opening.

'AMERICAN CLIPPER' has an angular opening.

Not the 'BEN HUR'

IMO

Well, Slap me up the side of my head. I didn't notice that. Good call Mark, I've been traded to the "Clippers" camp, variant unknown. There is an gap between C and F where this could be. Movement could very well have been upgraded at the point of sale.

~whap~

Movement upgrade at the point of Sale (the jewelers) makes perfect sense. - Hence the datecode matching the Case seriel number.

Again the movement may have simply been swapped out for a working1937 21J movement. They did exist you know Fifth.

Sometimes the simplest solution is the best solution.

I know this admin, I find it odd that the Movement Datecode matches the Case.

A movement swap performed by someone who had a 21 Jewel 10 AE the identical Date of the 17 Jewel 10 AE movement removed is a definate possibility.

Fifth beat me to the pictures, there is a difference at the "Middle Peak", and the bezel & crystal measurments are as follows...

Clipper:

Lug to Lug  36.2mm

Width with out crown  25.3mm

Crystal lenght  25.7mm

Crystal width  16.6mm

Ben Hur:

Lug to Lug  36.9mm

Width with out crown  25.1mm

Crystal length  28.1mm

Crystal width  17.2mm

Check it out Plains, maybe you have something we have not seen yet?? What ever it is... it's NICE!

My feeling is it is an American clipper with the engraved case much like the engraved case you have that you were goinmg to send me instead of the plain one I got for my clipper and by the way I love it and it is still my favorite watch. It is possible for some one to have the upgraded jewel count movement with the right date code since I have a few myself. I looked for the one in my 41 ambassador for a while but did find one 21 jewels and all. IMO an American Clipper C tentative to finding an ad with the engraved case for a C model.
