Silly question from an Australian....did they actually have 'air wardens' in the US during WWII?

I assue they did. Great watch and an even better advert. Nice find.

Wow, just watched those clips and I'm amazed at the numbers involved. Certainly helps explain the use of a center sweep hand to better determine the exact time of events.

'Nice one Kathy, and on the original band :o) I'm going out on a limb and saying this is a

Miss Air Warden - 1943

Date code on movement is an "x" for 1943, serial number appears to start with a letter "O", second number being a "3". I would be inclined to label this one a 1943.

Thanks Bob, I can see how it looks like an O but it is a D.  I had to look at it under my loop to make sure : )

Miss Air Warden - 1943, assume this watch was aimed at the young female volunteers.

I believe your assumption as well.  My grandfather could not go to war due to being deaf in one ear.  He was a volunteer like that.  I wasn't aware so many women were involved.

Just to clarify the date on the case is 1944 with the serial # starting with a D.  I know it looks like an O in the pic but it is a D when you look close.
