Watch Description

My father left this watch to me. I have done some research but have been unable to identify this watch. Any help that you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Althoug the watch is in fairly good shape considering it's age, I intend to refurbish it so it is in good shape when I pass it on to my son and grandson. If you could suggest a good restorer I would appreciate it. Once the watch is oppened up I should be able to provide more information about it. Thanks for your help!

Welcome to my bulova. Thanks for sharing this beautiful watch with us.

There are several very good restorers within the group and some advertise on the site.

You should be able to find one here. It will be necessary to open up the watch to get the information that will assist in iding the watch.

If you look at the back of the watch on the end that has the serial number you will notice a small tang on the case back. If you are inclined, you can take a butter knife and put it under the tab and pry up gently and the back should come loose.

If you decide to do this look for the movement model, it will usually be in a small box around the number such as 10BC or 10BT or something of that nature. Look carefully over the movement and you should see a date code like a triangel or square or any one of a number of different shapes.

If you take a picture of the movement, please be sure to take one of the inside of the case back as well.

This proceedure I have outlined is not difficult and will not damage the watch as long as you are careful. The case back will go back on the way it came off. just place it in position on the watch and gently snap it back in place.

JP, the butter knife worked like it was designed for the job. I added the pictures of the case and workings. The movement model is 10AK as you will see from the updated pictures. Thanks!

Case serial looks like 5119190, that would possibly put it to 1945, and I am not seeing a date stamp on the movement...

It looks to be in pretty good shape, a good service, a new crystal, a little polish and maybe a dial refinish and it should look like new...

I love it, a GOLD watch inherited from your father is a wonderful keepsake, ESPECIALLY since you've already earmarked it to your grandson! I contend the value in a piece like this, while being elevated by it being solid gold, is immeasurable from the family perspective, you are very fortunate to still have it! Do you know the occasion of your father getting the watch, graduation, marriage, maybe returning from the war? I've sent you a PM (private message) with a couple recommendation for restoration - you should see a link near the upper right of you screen to read it.

In terms of ID it is close, other than the engraving to the Carrell pictured above. If the movement date code is a square we'd be better recognizing it as a 1946 model as it was most likely made that year. At this time I'm Unknown.

I believe it was purchased shortly after he returned from WWII. I will ask to see if anybody in the family remembers exactly when he got it. Thanks.

My father definitely purchesed the watch in either 1945 or 1946 shortly after comming home from WWII. I asked if there was a case or any paperwork for the watch, but unfortunately there is not.

Great looking watch. I'm going to go with Unknown for now as well.  Solid Gold watches it seems were very rarely nationaly advertised.

JAKEWLLY  Great watch.  Is it Rose Gold or Yellow Gold?

I'm thinking Unknown for now, but double-checking the ads as I type.

The color is Rose Gold, but it changes color in different light from a Pink Rose Gold to almost a Yellow Gold. The watch runs but I was thinking I would wait to fully wind it until a watchmaker looks at it when it is restored. Thanks.

I was looking at identical Kreisler new/old stock watchbands from the 1940's on Ebay. All the sellers claim they are rolled gold bands, but only one clasp that I have seen actually showed the gold content. What would are your thoughts on this?
