Darrin,
Is the case back actually stamped A9 or 49??
It looks like all of the 1949 watches in the known/unknown database that show the back are stamped.
The serial number starts to get real fuzzy after 1946, so I don't know if that alone can be 100% from '46 on...
There's no separate date code on the back. It is the absence of one that prompted me to make the change. Also, the serial #'s on the other HE's dated prior to 1950, without date code, are consistent with the old scheme. I'm aware that it is a small sampling but I'm confident.

DarHin I found this 1948 His Excellency on my bench (almost UU except for dial). Note the case back is date coded 48 and has SN 006130. Mvnt is also 48. I have seen others which have this conflicting date code to first digit of case SN for 1948...I just don't remember how many.

I notice that the serial # of your example has only 5 digits. I haven't done a study of other examples but it would seem that the 48 takes the place of the first "date" digit of the serial #. If the "48" were missing it's possible that the serial # for your watch would be 8006130.
