I'm pretty excited about this one. It was listed as "doesn't run" and had no crown.I purchased it for $10.50, with only one other bidder.1952 Lenox with a custom "pie pan" dial, showing "Arthur Murray Award" Bulova. Snap back is stainless. As I threaded a crown on it, the watch immediately started running and is keeping time. Movement date coded L3, case is L2.. Condition is superb; I added the crown and a period correct leather strap.
After hours of "down the rabbit hole" research, I believe this watch was a prize given out on the TV show "Arthur Murray Party" that ran on 4 different networks between 1950 and 1960. The show was basically a long commercial for Arthur Murray Dance Studios, and consisted of Dancing, Comedy, Skits, celebrity guests and acts, and various competitions.
Very few of the original shows still exist, I found one dated 1957 that included a competition with judges featuring a female and a male chorus group from 2 colleges. After the sing-off and judging, all the girls were awarded a years supply of Arthur Murray nylons and the boys each got a Benrus portable clock (cheap advertising). I suspect this watch is a similar prize, but no information/documentation appears to survive that ties Bulova as a sponsor to the TV show, or The dance Studio..
My personal thoughts, I await other opinions.
