Watch Description

I have my grandfather's retirement watch from 1953 (date code L3). I've looked through the database, but cannot find any model that is similar. I did see an advertisement for an Ellsworth model that seemed to match this watch's look. The case serial number is 6890867, 14k gold and no indication it has jewels. I have not opened the case. It keeps great time, but if it gets cold it will stop. I took it to one jeweler, but they did not want to open it for cleaning because they said if it's keeping good time leave it alone. I appreciate any help in its identification.

Welcome to mybulova, that is a wonderful watch and excellent heirloom. Congrats! I agree, it's a first for the database and indeed is a

1953 Ellsworth.

Ellsworth

That is truly a treasure. If it was my grandfather's, I would seek out another qualified watch person and have it serviced. If it's stopping when cold, the oil is drying out/thickened, and it should be attended to if you intend to wear it. I suspect it scared the person who looked at it and they didn't feel comfortable opening it up. Amazing watch, thanks for sharing it with us!

Wow great advert match. Have to agree with a 1953 Bulova Ellsworth and a first for the database I think.

This watch is a keeper!!!

This is a wonderful heirloom, congratulations Rex! Imagine how proud of this watch your grandfather must have been. I'll also vote to tag it a 1953 model but when you have it serviced try to get the date code of the movement to verify the year of manufacture.

Thanks so much, panel members, in helping me identify the model of my Bulova. It's a pleasure to have and wear. Next is to send it off for its first servicing in 67 years.
