Watch Description

Case back has "L6" at the top underneath where it's stamped "Bulova". From reference materials on the site, I see that's 1956. However, when I search 1956 ads on the site, I see a very similar shape, but nothing with the black dial.

Welcome to mybulova. Your watch appears to be a 1956 President "D"

It should contain a 21 Jewel movement.

It was my Grandfather's watch, and it was given to me when he passed in 1993. I've finally found a shop I trust and having it refurbished a bit (cleaning, mainspring, new crown, new crystal, etc.). I'll post another pic when it's done.

Heirloom watches are the best and a very personal connection! I have my Dad's watch and I think of him every time I look at it on my wrist.

Congrats on getting and restoring your Grandfathers watch.   I agree it should be a 21 J movement (ask the jeweler to confirm jewels and caliber) and is a 1956 President "Bulova President "D".   The black dial ones are not as common so it is good to see another one in the database. Can't wait to see the completed project.

I finally got it back from repair and I could not be more happy. New crystal, crown, stem, and pins plus cleaning and regulation. They removed the corrosion on the watch and even salvaged the band. As I said, this was my Grandfather's and it means the world to me. For those thinking of sending watches somewhere for repair, I cannot say enough good things about "The Clock and Watch Shop" (824 Gravier St, New Orleans LA 70112 / 504-525-3961). They're family owned, and twin brothers Brett (watches) and Matt (clocks) are superb. Plus they're both great guys!
