1978 Oceanographer (Accutron Quartz model). Original band.
Nice watch. 242 movement. There was a difference between Accutron Quartz and Accuquartz...and I think the little quartz symbol on the dial was only associated with the Accutron Quartz, although not on dial of every accutron quartz. I also remember discussion about possibel "Accutron Quartz Duel Day" since it was printed on dials under day/date window for some examples. That model name didn't pan out.
So what do we call this example?
Accutron Quartz Ocenaographer (since it's on the dial)? Well we didn't go with Accutron Quartz Duel Day, even though it was on the dial of some examples.
Accutron Quartz Day & Date? I think that model name would have to be added to our name choices in the drop-down list.
Shoots....and it's got the 666ft on the dial, which was also discussed as a possible model class for the Accutrons (non-quartz and non-accuquartz). These ended up being ID'ed as "Deep Sea" if I remember correctly.
Do we create a new ID "Accutron Quartz Day & Date", and note the Oceanographer in the variant window? ...and ignore the 666 feet also on the dial....
I hope those folks who are into Accutrons chime in on the possible ID's for this one...whether they are panel members or not. I could use everyone's help on this one.
To muddy the waters further, I have Accutron Quartz examples of the Accutron Railroad watch, a TZ (Time Zone) version, and a "no day or date" version.
This leads me to lean towards having "Accutron Quartz" as the main identifier, since the heart of all of these models is the 242 Accutron Quartz movement.
I will post pics of the additional watches as time permits me.
Cheers,
Mike

Gosh Will, nothing worse than muddy water when I'm trying to ID a DIVE watch ( as you most likely know!)
I paused when I saw the Oceanographer markings, thinking the same thing. I think I'd have to go along with your thinking too. Or to put it terms easier to understand: I think I thought that what you thought your were thinking is what I was thinking I thought, if you know what I mean.
Accutron Quartz, I think.....
Would this be called an Oceanographer if it did not have the 242 movement? The 242 movement is the Accutron Quartz series 242, but the dial does not say Accutron; did Bulova place these movements in non-Accutron models by chance?
Bulova called different watches the Oceanographer during this time; but was it no longer a proper model name like it was several years earlier, just a version to identify the depth capabilities? This 1980 ad gives the name to an Accutron Quartz, an Automatic, and a Caravelle
So...I guess this is just an Accutron Quartz or simply Quartz
