Going with the 'glows in the dark' theory for now, it's all I have.

Case looks plated base metal Silver. Can't wait to pop the Crystal and see what's under there: needs a secs Hand, the old lume in the Hour and Minute Hands still looks intact.

Fresh from the proverbial 'sock drawer'

Radium numerals, Spade and Sword Hands.

* Caseback does not have the 'R' designation.

Military issue box image added confirms the 'R' part number suffix = Radium Dial.

according to the document below the original request from Uncle Sam to develop the Radium Dialed Military A-11 occured in September of 1943.

The request was complied with in October 1943.

haha, You're post came in before I could finish Will!....here's the last snippet of the final document indicating 2 samples were delivered.

IMO, these A-11 Dial 'improvements' lead directly to the development of the A-17 Navigation.

Another interesting tid-bit is in the last paragraph of the 2nd letter in My post above: Elgin proclaims that they are furnishing 'Wrist Watches to the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy Department with lumionous Dials'. - IMO they are discussing the 15 Jewel Military Issue Watches marked 'ORD DEPT' which would make the A-11 an Air Force issue piece exclusively, hence the 'AF' preceeding the Seriel number on the Caseback.

AF abbreviating AIR FORCE.

enjoy!

Hard to not give three ticks for Military Issue. :)  I don't remember, were we discussing giving these tentative names like A-11, A-17 etc....?
