Good question, we call it the 'variant'. Think of it as a sub designation to the model 'Bulova 23'. Some models were so popular that Bulova offered them in a variety of configurations or styles. The '23' was offered in dozens of variations, some different only in the mount (expansion band or leather strap). As you look over the advert linked below you'll see six variants of the 23 model but also note that several other models shown are listed with variant letters as well. Within the 23's shown note different lug styles (lugs are where the band or strap attaches) different dial colors and different hour markings on the dial.
