Close, but advert states stainless steel metal back. Subject is gold plate.

Checking for an earlier Ranger ad. Subject watch is 1938.  OT's ad is 1940.  I think we would see '38's w/ gold back, and stainless coming in around 1940?  Fifth- you know this transition date range off the top of your head.  Similar engraving on the 1940 Ranger ad, and with deminsions now provided, it's a longer rectangle.

....or did we go down this Ranger road before :)

hmmm. might be.

Looks like it became the Bulova 'Chief' in about 1943.

We have the subject ID'd in the Watch database as a 'BANKER' if not for anything else but for consistancy I'm with 'BANKER', as Shawn points out several, if not all Models in this mid - late 1930's era came with engraved and non-engraved Cases: the 'AMERICAN CLIPPER', 'MINUTE MAN', 'PHANTOM' and 'SENATOR' et al. for example.

I believe if the Case dimensions and Crystal specs of the subject were compared side by side with a known 'BANKER' as advertised We'd be looking at the same Case.

Crockett? Hmmm there seem to be a lot of similarities. The slight difference in the case shape could be attributed to artistic rendition of the ad ( better view here - http://www.mybulova.com/watches/1938-crockett-726 ). The seconds track is slightly different and the inside curve of the case next to the 3 & 9 is more pointed in the advert. The minute track doesn't appear to follow the curve of the case but that could be perspective. Mark, I'm not bucking your theory just yet but as long as we have a tentative match to an ad we should explore that first. We have no documented Crockett's in our db but this is certainly a Bulova produced ad and a valid model.

The 'CROCKETT' bezel opening is Tonneau (curved) and the lugs differ.

Looks like the banker but engraved...

Whilst the minute track looks straight the case looks to have a slight curve. Banker advert looks to have nice straight sides.

Fifth as you say the Crockett is tonneau, as is the subject watch.

Tentative Crockett for me.
